HIV&U HIV-the three phases Acute phase Chronic phase AIDS
Acute Phase • Start of an infection is viral replication and killing of CD4 T cells • Symptoms appear three weeks into phase such as: • Fever • Rash • Muscle ache • Within a week the immune starts to regain control
Chronic Phase • Maintenance of viral levels at a set point • CD4 T cells remain high but over time concentrations fall • Power shifts away from immune system, HIV skyrockets • Immune proliferates and new infections mark the signs of AIDS
AIDS • AIDS becomes lethal within a year or two • Patients survive HIV between 10 or 11 years but as it destroys the CD4 lymphocytes the virus gains access to the interior of the cells and causes death
