Verbs- orange I can ____________ • All of the words listed here show action or things you can do. • A sentence is not complete without a verb. • Don’t for get about your “be” verbs: is, am, are, was were, been, being
Noun Markers- red(Alsoknown as articles) • Shows that a noun is coming • There are 3: a, an, the • The teachers meet. 6. The trees grew. • Students work. 7. An egg broke. • An ant crawls. 8. The class reads. • The bell rang. 9. The dog sleeps. • A phone rings. 10. Birds chirp.
CompleterNouns (Direct Objects) - yellow • Tells about a person, place, or thing, but it does not tell who or what the sentence is about. • Nouns before the verb tell who or what the sentence is about. (Subject Nouns) • Nouns after the verb answer the question who or what. (Completer Nouns/ Direct Object) • Example: The cat drank the milk. (answers the question – What did the cat drink?)
Subject & Predicate The dog chews a bone. • The subject tells who or what the sentence is about. • The predicate tells what the subject is doing. • The subject is highlighted in yellow; the predicate is highlighted in another color.
Adjectives - blue • Describes or modifies a noun • It answers one of these questions: what kind? How many? Which one? What Kind? How many? Which one?

Proper Nouns - Yellow • Tell the name of a specific person, place, or thing • Specific names of things are proper nouns and are capitalized. Proper Noun Common Noun
Prepositions - Green • Show the position or relationship of one noun to another • Examples: up, down, across, under, above, in, to • A (prepositional phrase) includes a preposition, article and noun • Nouns in a prepositional phrase are called the object of the preposition.
Prepositions - Green The squirrel ran. • Re-write the sentence 5 times adding prepositional phrases. Example: The squirrel ran (up the tree).
Pronouns - Yellow • Takes the place of a noun (person, place or thing). Mrs. Jones gives the toy to John. Re-write using pronouns: She gives the toy to him. Using pronouns does NOT change the meaning of the sentence.

Possessive Pronouns – blue • Function or act as an adjective that answers the question which one or whose. Her book is on the floor. (underline her in blue and draw a blue arrow to the noun book. Answers whose book it is) Their house is on the left. (underline their in blue and draw a blue arrow to house. Answers whose house it is)
