One Country against another • Countries sometimes compete for these: • Resources • Land • Power
RIVALRIES EMERGE • Countries started to hate each other. • Countries started to steal from each other. • Countries went to war with each other.

Napoleon takes Power • French Revolution had 8 years of instability. (1789-1797) • Napoleon takes control in a “coup de etat” • Taking power by force.
WhyNapoleon? • War hero and Popular w/ people. • Kept many of the rights they fought for in the Revolution • Elect him as leader.

Napoleon’s Accomplishments • Set up National Bank • Organized the education system. • Allowed religious freedom
The NAPOLEONIC CODE • Based off Enlightenment ideals…. • Equality of all citizens, before the law • All Frenchman shall enjoy equal rights. • Divorce is allowed by mutual consent. • Advancement in society based on merit. • Did not allow…. • Women could not exercise the rights of citizenship. • Males of the household had complete authority.
Dictator of France • Started to move outside of borders. • Europe lives in fear. • Still believes in control over individual freedoms.
Conquering Europe • Used skilled soldiers and new methods. !Brilliant Man! • Created empire using relatives as leaders. • He is one “BAD” short dude!

Napoleon’s Defeat • In 1812 Napoleon invades Russia. • Advances to Moscow, then makes a huge MISTAKE! • Cold, Harsh Winter
Napoleon in Exile • Sent to Elba • Attempts to come back. • Takes power again, but only for 100 days. • Exiled for good, this time. • Island of St. Helena • Passes away in 1821
Results of Napoleon’s Rule • France is stable for 15 years • Nationalism spreads through France • Develops hatred for Germans • Anything “GERMAN”!!
