Early Years Strategy Aim1. To develop integrated flexible services to provide effective learning and childcare for all children and families. • High quality in LA classes and centres • Good inspections across partner provider settings • Development of literacy and numeracy trackers • Maintaining the improvements to deferred entry • Planned and opened new nursery class provision • Additional training to support 0-3
Early Years Strategy Aim2. To develop a highly skilled and motivated workforce to deliver a high quality Early Years service • All LA staff registered with the SSSC • 59 practitioners studying for the BA/17 completed • 9 supported for prof dev award • 7 completed the Froebel qualification • Plans to train staff to deliver 600 hours • Introduction of SEYO post
Early Years Strategy Aim3. To develop universal services in partnership to support all children and families • Improved partnership working with the Early Years Collaborative • PEEP and a range of parent programmes delivered • Reviewing breakfast club provision • Launch a co-operative charter to support parent led after school clubs • Partnership with economic development
Early Years Strategy Aim4. Learning through play opportunities and active learning are developed and integral parts of the early years service • Learning through play CPD • Play Forum and Play Champion • Grounds for Learning worked with 6 schools to transform playgrounds • 2 schools gained legacy funding • 750 staff attended 22 training opps • OPAL water play won national play award • Play Day on Royal Mile
What next? Implementation of the Children and Young People Act (Scotland) • Passed in February • Draft statutory guidance issued • Commencement 1st August 2014 • Parts 6,7 and 8 relate to Early Learning and Childcare and the powers within LA related to day care and out of school care • Entitlement of early Learning and Childcare for all 3 and 4 year olds • Increased numbers of eligible two year olds to include children from “workless households.”

New developments • Aim The number of primary 1 children who are obese will reduce form 8.5% to 8.1% by December 2016
