  4. <History of Taiwanese Movies>

  5. 1900-1945 • The era of Japanese rule • Adopting many conventions in Japanese • the use of a “benshi” (narrator of silent films) Ex: Wang Yung-feng(王雲峰) Lu Su-shang (呂訴上) Zhan Tian-Ma(詹天馬)

  6. Taiwanese Cinema after 1945 • The end of the Chinese civil war • 1949: Taiwanese cinema grew again • 1962: Out of a total of 120 films, only seven in Mandarin

  7. New Wave Cinema, 1982 – 1990 • Feature: Known for their realistic, down-to-earth, and sympathetic portrayals of Taiwanese life • Examples: • 1983: Growing Up by ChenKun-hou • 1989: A City of Sadness by Hou Hsiao-hsien

  8. Second New Wave, 1990-2007 • Feature: Slightly less serious and just as committed to portraying the Taiwanese perspective • Examples: • 1992: The Peach Blossom Land by Lai Sheng-chuan • 1994: Vive L’Amour by Tsai Ming-liang • 1999: March of Happiness by Lin Sheng-shing • 2006: Eternal Summer by Chen Jeng-dao

  9. Ang Lee- The most well-known of the Second New Wave director • 1991: Pushing Hands • 1993: The Wedding Banquet • 1994: Eat Drink Man Woman. It focused on the generational and cultural 1111conflicts confronting so many modern families • 2000: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon . It revived the wuxia genre successfully. Although not in the tradition of New Wave or Second New Wave, it is a commercial success which placed Asian films firmly in the international domain • 2007: Lust Caution

  12. Action Filmsare a type of film where one or more heroes are thrust into a series of challenges that require special feats, extended fights and frenetic chases. Some of the most well-known old-school action film heroes

  13. Adventure Filmsare exciting stories, with new experiences or exotic locales. • Documentary Filmsare a source of film that records the primarily for the purposes of instruction or maintaining a historical record.

  14. Comediesare a kindof dramatic works that have happy endings. • Animated Filmsare the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2D or 3D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement.

  15. Musical Filmsare a kind of film in which songs sung by the characters are interwoven into the narrative, sometimes accompanied by dancing. • War Filmsare concerned with warfare. Usually about naval, air or land battles, sometimes focusing instead on prisoners of war, covert operations, military training or other related subjects.

  16. Differences between Science Fiction Films and Fantasy Films Science Fiction Films Fantasy Films Futuristic machines, robots, space ships, alien planets, and alien races. Magic, sword fighting and spells, dragons and maidens in distress. Difference Heroes, villains and monsters, impossible quests with impossible odds and victory for the good guys at the end.   17. Differences between Romance Films and Romantic Comedies Romantic Comedies Romance Films Have the risk of heartbreaking dominating the whole story. How will the lovers recognize that they love each other? Difference The one or both of them are afraid of telling the other one how they feel Difference of the Obstacles Much bigger. The societal prejudice. Example

  18. Three Most Obvious Differences between Thriller Films and Horror films Horror Films Thriller Films Are meant to thrill the viewers. Are meant to horrify the viewers. Are mainly witty, usually twisted, and contain better plots. Are more often than not predictable. Are often more realistic and more practical. Usually have more supernatural elements.
