2. The JR. Rider Reader This is your chance to show how powerful writing can be. We will work together to produce this monthly publication that will consist of various styles of writing.

3. The GOAL • The GOAL here is to construct something special for ourselves that will demonstrate how our writing will evolve AND to have fun creating a new piece of writing.

4. Specifics • Time will be set aside each week to work on your writing project. • You will be given a specific theme for each month. • Each student will write in a different style of writing. • The Jr. Rider Reader will be produced and posted online. You will also get a copy for yourselves. • Now lets discuss the 5 styles of writing.

5. The Big Four • Persuasive Writing – Trying to convince someone of something. • Descriptive Writing – Uses 5 senses to describe something in detail • Narrative Writing – tells a story; fact or fiction • Expository (Informative) Writing – Gives information. This explains something.

6. The other one • Creative Writing is a mix of all types. You must think creatively to write this way and often times you will have to use new ideas. Fiction is the basis for creative writing. Creative Writing

Persuasive Writing • Persuasive – Writing that states the opinion of the writer and attempts to influence the reader. • Simply put: You must try and convince the reader that you are right. • This style uses FACTS, details, convincing words, and emphasis on what you want the reader to be convinced of.

9. Descriptive Writing • Descriptive – A type of informative writing that uses the five senses to paint a picture for the reader. This writing incorporates imagery and specific details. • Simply put: you are DESCRIBING something. When you describe something you focus on what it looks like, smells like, tastes like, sounds like, and feels like. • Use lots of adjectives. Describing words like “beautiful” or “ugly” paint a clear picture in our minds.

11. Narrative Writing • Narrative – Writing in which the author tells a story. The story could be fact or fiction. • You tell a narrative when you talk about what you did last night, or talk about a vacation you took somewhere. • This can also be a made up story. • Any kind of story is considered a narrative.

13. Expository Writing • Expository – Writing in which author’s purpose is to inform or explain the subject to the reader. • We can call this Informative writing. Essentially this is a “how-to” or an article in the news. • This is strictly facts. Information delivered to the reader for the purpose of gaining knowledge. • Don’t confuse this with descriptive writing. Very different.

14. Example of Expository Writing Hollenbeck Middle School is located in East Los Angeles. It is home to the Jr. Riders. There are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on campus. There are several after-school programs involved with Hollenbeck to keep students engaged with activities. Hollenbeck also has several resources to help students and parent.

15. Creative Writing • Creative – Writing that expresses imagination and personal thought. This can be the hardest style of writing because it often carries the other four styles within it. On the other hand, this style of writing is considered very expressive and can be fun to produce. • Be Creative! Make up a story! • This is how movies, plays, books, and TV shows are made.
