  1. HYDROLOGIC FIELDWORK • MANUAL STAGE GAGE INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE • TIPPING-BUCKET RAIN GAGE INSTALLATION • SURVEYING (LEVELING) • E-19 REVISION

  2. MANUAL GAGE INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE • STAFF GAGE • WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE

  3. STAFF GAGE INSTALLATION

  4. STAFF GAGE INSTALLATION

  5. STAFF GAGE INSTALLATION

  6. STAFF GAGE INSTALLATION • GET PERMISSION FROM BRIDGE OR POWER POLE OWNER BEFORE INSTALLING A STAFF GAGE ON THE STRUCTURE. • A WRITTEN APPLICATION WITH DRAWING SHOWING HOW GAGE WILL BE ATTACHED TO THE BRIDGE IS SOMETIMES REQUIRED.

  7. STAFF GAGE INSTALLATION • SURVEY THE GAGE SITE AND DETERMINE THE STAGE AT THE BASE OF THE STRUCTURE (POWER POLE OR BRIDGE PIER). THIS IS THE STARTING STAGE FOR CONSTRUCTING THE STAFF GAGE. • MARK THE STRUCTURE AT A SPECIFIC STAGE. • LINE-UP THE STAFF GAGE WITH THE SPECIFIC STAGE MARKED ON THE POLE OR PIER AND ATTACH IT. EXTEND THE GAGE ABOVE THE FLOOD OF RECORD.

  8. STAFF GAGE INSTALLATION • FOR ATTACHMENT TO A WOOD SURFACE, USE RUST RESISTANT WOOD/LAG SCREWS. • FOR ATTACHMENT TO CONCRETE, DRILL HOLES IN THE CONCRETE AND MOUNT THE STAFF GAGE USING CONCRETE SCREWS (E.G.,TAPCONS). OPTIONALLY, MOUNT THE STAFF GAGE ON A PIECE OF TREATED LUMBER (E.G., 2”X12”) AND MOUNT THE LUMBER TO THE CONCRETE SURFACE USING STEEL ANCHORS AND BOLTS, OR SELF-ANCHORING BOLTS.

  9. STAFF GAGE INSTALLATION • TOOLS NEEDED: • 3/8” DRILL FOR WOOD DRILLING • 3/8” OR ½” HAMMER DRILL FOR CONCRETE DRILLING • WOOD AND/OR CONCRETE DRILL BITS • PORTABLE GENERATOR UNLESS DRILL IS BATTERY POWERED. • SCREWS/BOLTS/WASHERS • SCREWDRIVER AND WRENCH • HAMMER • CARPENTER’S LEVEL

  16. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE INSTALLATION • GET PERMISSION FROM BRIDGE OWNER BEFORE INSTALLING A MANUAL STAGE GAGE ON THE BRIDGE. • A WRITTEN APPLICATION WITH DRAWING SHOWING HOW GAGE WILL BE ATTACHED TO THE BRIDGE IS SOMETIMES REQUIRED.

  17. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE INSTALLATIONSET UP SAFETY SIGNS AND CONES

  18. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE INSTALLATIONMEASURE THE RAILING

  19. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE INSTALLATIONCREATE THE BRACKETS – 3/8” OR ½” THREADED ROD

  20. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE INSTALLATIONDRILL HOLES IN GAGE FOR THE BRACKETS

  21. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE INSTALLATIONATTACH GAGE TO BRIDGE RAIL

  22. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE INSTALLATIONATTACH GAGE TO BRIDGE RAIL

  23. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE INSTALLATIONATTACH WEIGHT AND LOCK

  24. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE INSTALLATION • INSTALL A SAFETY RAILING IF THE BRIDGE RAILING IS LESS THAN 39 INCHES HIGH.

  25. SURVEY WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE • HOLD SURVEY ROD ON BENCHMARK OR REFERENCE MARK OF KNOWN ELEVATION.

  26. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE INSTALLATION • TAKE A BACK SIGHT (BS) READING ON THE SURVEY ROD USING A LEVEL. THIS GIVES YOU THE HEIGHT OF THE INSTRUMENT (HI).

  27. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE INSTALLATION • HOLD THE SURVEY ROD ON THE CHECKBAR OF THE WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE. • READ THE ROD USING THE LEVEL. SUBTRACT THE ROD READING (FORESIGHT, FS) FROM THE HEIGHT OF THE INSTRUMENT TO GET THE CHECKBAR ELEVATION.

  28. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE CALIBRATION • SUBTRACT THE ZERO DATUM OF THE GAGE FROM THE CHECKBAR ELEVATION TO GET THE NORMAL CHECKBAR READING FOR THE GAGE. • IF CHECKBAR EL = 742.98 FT AND ZERO DATUM EL = 695.24 FT, THE NORMAL CHECKBAR READING IS 742.98 MINUS 695.24, OR 47.74.

  29. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE CALIBRATION • SET THE NORMAL CHECKBAR READING BY LOOSENING 2 SCREWS ON LEFT SIDE OF THE GAGE. HOLD DRUM TO PREVENT DRUM FROM TURNING. • REST WIRE-WEIGHT ON CHECKBAR, HOLD DRUM, AND TURN HANDLE UNTIL THE CORRECT CHECKBAR READING OCCURS. • TIGHTEN SCREWS.

  30. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE CALIBRATION • IF NECESSARY, ADJUST THE HANDLE SO THAT IT EXTENDS TOWARD THE BACK OF THE GAGE. THIS ENABLES THE WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE COVER TO CLOSE.

  31. WIRE-WEIGHT GAGE MAINTENCE DEMONSTRATION

  32. RAIN GAGE INSTALLATION AT U.S.GEOLOGICAL SURVEY (USGS) GAGE SITES • GET PERMISSION FROM USGS BEFORE ATTACHING EQUIPMENT TO THEIR GAGE SHELTERS. • MAKE SURE THAT THE USGS WILL HOOK UP THE RAIN GAGE TO THEIR DATA COLLECTION PLATFORM (DCP) IF YOU INSTALL THE GAGE.

  33. RAIN GAGE INSTALLATION

  34. RAIN GAGE INSTALLATION

  35. RAIN GAGE INSTALLATION • 1. One 10 foot long 1 1/2 inch EMT conduit pipe .................. $ 20.49 • 2. One 1.5 inch EMT set screw coupling ............................ $ 1.55 (Note the set screws are just slotted screw driver type) • 3.
