Injury Prevention • Preparation • Training – You need to prepare the body for sport due to the different demands that it places on the limbs • Warm-Up – Prepares you to take part in sport, physically and psychologically • Physical State – Remove all jewellery and ensure that you are wearing the proper clothing e.g. studded boots for football, shinpads etc… • Participation • Fair Play – By playing by the rules you’ll minimise the risk of injury • Officials – These are in place to ensure that the players follow the rules and that everyone is safe

Injury Prevention • Equipment • Correctness – The right equipment must be used for the correct sport e.g. a rugby player couldn’t use an American football helmet to play • The equipment must be worn correctly to avoid injury • Condition – The equipment must be regularly checked and kept in good order, a referee checks the players boots before a game • Rugby posts have to have protective coverings around them • Environment • Uncontrolled – In outdoor activities the weather is a factor and can be potentially dangerous in some outdoor pursuits e.g. Rock climbing • Controlled – These are things that can be avoided through pitch inspections, crowd control measures and appropriate facilities

  4. Causes of Injury • There are Two Types of Injury: • Internally Caused • Externally Caused • Internally Caused Injuries are Where there are No Outside Factors • Externally Caused Injuries are a Result of an Outside Influence e.g. Equipment, Opponents or Playing Conditions

Internally Caused Injuries • Overuse Injuries • These are as a results of either Training or Performing too much • This can cause Stress Fractures, Inflammation (Tennis Elbow), Torn Cartilage via Constant Twisting & Turning (Football, Hockey, Rugby) • Sudden Injuries • These are caused Instantly through Overstretching or Twisting & Turning too Quickly • This results in Pulling/Tearing Muscles and Damaging Joints

Externally Caused Injuries • Impact Injuries • These are Cuts, Bruises & Fractures • These can be caused by an Opponent or Equipment like a Goal Post • Foul Play • This involves Opponents and can be Minor or Serious • Accidents • Some activities result in Injuries as part of the Sport e.g. Skiing & Boxing • Equipment • Faulty or Poorly Fitting Equipment can Result in Injury • Runners often get Blisters when going Long Distances
