  2. Diversity • Refers to the great variety of people and their backgrounds, experiences, opinions, religions, ages, talents and abilities.

  3. Prejudices • Negative biases or feelings, towards people of a particular ethnicity or culture and are not based on fact.

  4. Stereotype • Assumption that all members of a group fit the same pattern.

  5. Cultural Tendencies • Common beliefs, such as religion or a common way of acting.

  6. Modeling • Setting the example of appropriate behavior. • Who should do this? The Manager Good model or not so good model?

  7. Benefits of Diversity • Creates a more enjoyable and productive environment • Attracts more customers • Becomes an employer of choice • Improves legal protection

  8. Cross-Cultural Interaction • Meaningful communication among employees from all backgrounds • Participate in diversity training • Model behavior • Integrate diversity into the mission statement • Encourage studying and using different languages • Use multilingual materials

  9. Behaviors of a Good Leader • Provides direction • Leads consistently • Influences others • Motivates others • Coaches and develops others • Anticipates change • Fosters teamwork

  11. The Interview At some point in your career you’ll have to interview for a job or promotion. What about the questions? What can be asked and what can not be asked in order to avoid discrimination?

  12. Questions that can not be asked • Race • Ethnic background • Country of origin • Former or maiden name • Parents’ names • Languages other than English (unless a second language is required) • Prior arrests – convictions can be asked about • Marital status • Children or plans to have children, child care • Spouse information • Religion • Credit history or personal finances • Disabilities, unless directly related to the job • Height, weight, hair color, etc…
