SCARAB/SAFFRON DEVELOPMENT PROJECT 24” EXPORT LINE REPAIR BY MECHANICAL METHODS THIS SHORT PRESENTATION WILL PROVIDE PRELIMINARY DETAILS OF TWO METHODS: 1) REPAIR BY “INTEGRITY” CLAMP 2) REPAIR BY SPOOLPIECE END CONNECTOR
Repair by Integrity Clamp This repair type assumes that the damage to the pipeline will be left as is and the structural integrity of the linepipe in the area of the damage be restored by a pipeline structural integrity repair clamp. These types of clamp are installed on to the pipe and have gripping mechanisms which ensure that the longitudinal and circumferential pipeline loads transfer through the body of the clamp. These clamps are commonly used as a permanent repair solution in many operators’ Emergency Pipeline Repair Systems. The clamps can be either installed by diver or by ROV.

Repair by Integrity Clamp The track record of one supplier, Oilstates Hydrotech, shows that 262 of these permanent repair clamps have been installed worldwide between 1972 and 2003. OilStates Hydrotech can supply a 24" ANSI 1500, full structural, diver installed, permanent repair Hydroclamp. Delivery, 16 weeks ex. Houston. Cost $210,000. Other possible suppliers are Oceaneering and PLIDCO
Repair by Pipeline End Connectors This repair type assumes that the damaged section of the pipeline is cut out and a new spoolpiece installed into the pipeline. These types of connectors are installed on to the cut pipe ends and have gripping mechanisms which ensure that the longitudinal and circumferential pipeline loads transfer through the body of the connectors. The spoolpiece is then deployed with normal flanges to make the connection. These connectors are commonly used as a permanent repair solution in many operators’ Emergency Pipeline Repair Systems. The connectors can be either installed by diver or by ROV.
Repair by Pipeline End Connectors The repair requires the following components: 1: 2 No. 24" ANSI 1500, Collet Grip Flanges with Viton seals and integral test port, one with axial end gap adjustment. 2: 24" ANSI 1500, Ball Flange. 3: 24" ANSI 1500, Swivel Ring Flange.
Repair by Pipeline End Connectors The connection is made by installing this connector on the pipe cut end first. The spoolpiece is then installed with standard flange ends (see later slides). The connector can provide two degrees of freedom for makeup flexibility: 360° of rotational freedom, and axial stroke capacity of typically 1 foot. Collet Grip Flange Connector(Example of Oilstates HydroTech)
Repair by Pipeline End Connectors The device provides make up to industry standard flanges, adding four degrees of freedom for makeup flexibility. The bolt hole flange swivels 360° to accommodate rotational alignment with the mating flange. Additionally, the spherical components allow angular adjustment up to 12½° from the tubular's axis in any plane for flange face alignment. Ball Flange Connector(Example of Oilstates HydroTech)
Repair by Pipeline End Connectors The swivel ring flange permits 360 deg. Rotation of an outer ring around a hub, to allow easy alignment of bolt holes when attaching to a mating standard flange Swivel Ring Flange(Example of Oilstates HydroTech)
Repair by Pipeline End Connectors Morgrip Coupling(An alternative method of mechanical connection) MORGRIP couplings can be used as a tie in method for any type of pipeline without having to use flanges or hub connections. The couplings are installed with the spool and slipped over the pipe joints and activated to make the connection
Repair by Pipeline End Connectors The budgetary costs from two suppliers of the repair components are: 1: 2 No. 24" ANSI 1500, Connector Flanges supplier A = $277,500 : supplier B = $171,000 2: 24" ANSI 1500, Ball Flange = $72,500 3: 24" ANSI 1500, Swivel Ring Flange = $26,750 Total supplier A = $376,750 and supplier B = $270,250 Delivery from supplier A is 20 weeks and from supplier B is 6 weeks
