  12. ORGANIZATION I.T. Support Networks & Infrastructure Database Administration Programming

  13. NETWORKS & INFRASTRUCTURE 2010-2011 Doubled Internet connection speed – increase productivity and access on & off campus Wireless points added – improved WI-FI across campus Replace old network equipment with enterprise-grade Cisco systems Overhaul core network infrastructure – the ‘not pretty’ part Reducing energy consumption by taking advantage of some cloud computing and virtualization…

  14. [CONT.] NETWORKS & INFRASTRUCTURE CLOUD COMPUTING “Cloud computing refers to the on-demand provision of computational resources (data, software) via a computer network, rather than from a local computer.” We’re there – but not too much. Examples: my.nwacc.edu, www.nwacc.edu, jobs.nwacc.edu, nwacc.blackboard.com. Debating moving NWACC email to Gmail. There was a time when every household, town, farm or village had its own water well. Today, shared public utilities give us access to clean water by simply turning on the tap; cloud computing works in a similar fashion. Just like water from the tap in your kitchen, cloud computing services can be turned on or off quickly as needed. Like at the water company, there is a team of dedicated professionals making sure the service provided is safe, secure and available on a 24/7 basis. When the tap isn't on, not only are you saving water, but you aren't paying for resources you don't currently need. Vivek Kundra , Federal CIO, United States Government

  15. [CONT.] NETWORKS & INFRASTRUCTURE VIRTUALIZATION “Virtualization, in computing, is the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, such as a hardware platform, operating system, a storage device or network resources.” We’re there – 50%-ish. Examples: Exchange, web services (Faculty FTP, etc.), Active Directory, Blackboard Test, Public Safety (key card, reporting), Foundation/Raiser’s Edge, McAfee Antivirus, K:Drive, Test (Eaglenet, Ad Astra, Sharepoint, Banner), Argos, Eaglenet, TracDat, Xtender – and more!

  24. Redundancy • Multiple links or connections to provide failover in the event one link fails • Load Balancing • In computer networking, load balancing is a technique to distribute workload evenly • Gigabit • 1000 Megabits • Billion bits of data NETWORK SUMMARY Redundancy to Internet firewall Redundancy in data center – servers to network Redundancy for access layer to core layer Increased load balancing Core switch redundancy for campus fiber optic backbone 10 Gigabit connectivity (core switch) – WE CAN GROW 10 Gigabit footprint (access layer) – WE CAN GROW 1 Gigabit speeds to workstations and desktops – SPEED! POE switches – foundation for IP phones and cameras Managed networking, graphing, trending, event notifications and more

  33. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS Technical projects are highly visible, complex, large margin for error (it’s expected)…but you can NOT fear them. Past Project: Portal In the beginning… Status What have we learned? Game plan near-perfection “Always do what you are afraid to do.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

  34. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS Technical projects are highly visible, complex, large margin for error (it’s expected)…but you can NOT fear them. Current Project: Public-Facing Website In the beginning… Status What have we learned? Structure, structure, structure. “How does a project get to be a year late? One day at a time.” Frederick P. Brooks, The Mythical Man-Month: Essays on Software Engineering

  35. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS Technical projects are highly visible, complex, large margin for error (it’s expected)…but you can NOT fear them. Future Project: Email to Gmail/Live.edu? In the beginning… Status What have we learned? “The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.”Sven Goran Eriksson
