Role & Purpose of the T-K Steering Committee • Receive and disseminate T-K Information Specific to Fresno County and Kings Canyon USD • To collaborate, communicate , and articulate as we work together to ensure education for the youth of Reedley, Orange Cove and the mountain communities. • To provide input in matters specific to T-K such as: Instructional Resources, Curriculum, Assessments, Report Cards, etc.

  4. Kindergarten Readiness Actof 2010 • Signed by Governor Schwarzenegger in September of 2010 (Senate Bill 1381) • Rolls back the cutoff Kindergarten age start date for students to turn 5 from December 2nd to September 1st • Three Year Roll Out beginning in 2012-13

  5. What is the Kindergarten Readiness Act, 2010 and what does it change? • Amends the State Ed. Code to create Transitional Kindergarten for students born between September 2 and December 2nd • Will offer the opportunity to 120,000 more children each year to have additional year of preparation

What is the Kindergarten Readiness Act, 2010 and what does it change? • Changes kindergarten entry date from 5 years old by December 2 to September 1 so children enter kindergarten at age 5. • Will offer developmentally appropriate curriculum aligned with kindergarten standards • Mastery vs. Exposure

What is the Kindergarten Readiness Act, 2010 and what does it change? • Offers more options for parents, it is voluntary • Provides the “gift of time” for students through a two year Kindergarten program • Allows districts to offer a “modified kindergarten curriculum that is developmentally and age appropriate”

Three Year Roll Out • Year “0” – 2011–2012 • Expect “clean up legislation” to offer further guidance to districts • KCUSD to “Pilot” Transitional Kindergarten at 2 sites, 1 in Orange Cove and 1 in Reedley • Priority to KCUSD kindergarten students with birthdates between November 2 and December 2, 2006.

  9. Year 1 - 2012-2013 • Adjusts Kindergarten start date to student being 5 on or before November 2, 2012 • A child who will have his or her fifth birthday between November 2 and December 2 shall be admitted to a transitional kindergarten program maintained by the school district .

  10. Year 2 – 2013-2014 • Adjusts Kindergarten start date to student being 5 on or before October 2, 2013 • Fifth birthday between October 2 and December 2 shall be admitted to a transitional kindergarten program maintained by the school district.

  11. Year 3 – 2014-2015 (and thereafter) • Adjusts Kindergarten start date to student being 5 on or before September 2, 2014 • Fifth birthday between September 2 and December 2 admitted to transitional kindergarten program maintained by the district.

  12. What does the research say? • Beginning Kindergarten at an older age improves children’s social and academic development. • Provides a significant boost to test scores • TK will generate savings to our education system through reduced special education and grade retention costs.

  13. Working with FCOE in Partnership • KCUSD on the FCOE T-K Steering Committee and T-K Professional Learning Community • Marcy Guthrie, Bonnie Smith and Mary Stanley serve on one or both of these committees. • Model in place in Kingsburg from which committee is learning.
