Why Should I? • How much do you learn by listening to someone else ‘chalk-and-talk’? • Many different psychological and philosophical views • Neuroscience has shown us the knowledge that is contextualized is retained and used longer than decontextualized knowledge.
What is a context? • A context is the box we teach inside • In our lessons, ‘business’ is our context • Children learn skills that hook into their context, they can then use those same skills in other contexts
Why Use Social Enterprise to Teach? • It is a context, children can understand ideas and how they relate to each other • They can transfer the information to other contexts • It requires cooperative groups and critical thinking • Children are interested and you can challenge them! (zone of proximal development)
Why Use it? • The earlier children learn a concept, the better they understand it later…you can always make it more complicated! • Why not make them successful at problem solving and voicing their opinions? • After they link lots of experiences to their learning, it’s much easier to remember.
