The Unpardonable Sin is to Blaspheme the Holy Spirit Mark 3:28-30; Matthew 12:32; Luke 12:10
Mark 3:28-30 • Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation: Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.
Here’s the Bottom Line If you can stand and say without equivocation that you know you are an authenticate, born again, new creature in Christ—you can’t commit this unpardonable sin.
Luke 12:10 • And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: • but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.
SON OF MAN Messianic title used by Jesus to express his heavenly origin, earthly mission, and glorious future coming. It does not refer merely to his human nature or humanity, as some church fathers or contemporary scholars believe. Rather, it reflects on the heavenly origin and divine dignity of Jesus, on the mystery of his manifestation in human form, and on his earthly mission that took him to the cross and then into glory. • Tyndale Bible Dictionary
A Critical Distinction • Because of His presence on the earth, Jesus establishes a distinction between the present blasphemy of His name, His teaching, and His mission and the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit (and His work) concerning Jesus.
In this Passage We have 2 things going on: An offer of grace, forgiveness, and mercy A stark warning of possible impending eternal guilt and punishment with no hope of redemption
FirstWhat a God! What a God, who gives those who were seeking to destroy Jesus and accusing him of being possessed or mad the possibility of a second chance.
The Fact Is: With the physical separation of the Son from the Triune God on the earth, it would have been possible to have reviled Jesus and still come to faith in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Today, this is not possible.
The unity of Christ and the Holy Spirit prevents a distinction that was possible when Christ was on the planet. The Spirit of Christ cannot be distinguished from the Holy Spirit.
Bottom Line Christ lives in me, because the Spirit of Christ lives in me. And the Spirit of Christ lives in me, because I have been sealed with the Holy Spirit.
From Mark 3:28-30 We see that the Holy Spirit’s work on this planet is of supreme importance in the economy of God. Why?
The Spirit points Humans to Jesus AND John 15:26 • But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
John 16:13 • Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
From Romans 8:9 We learn that the unique distinction of being able to revile the Son of Man, but not the Holy Spirit, is no longer possible.
Romans 8:9 • But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. • Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
Let me show you the importance of the Spirit’s work in man’s salvation 1 Corinthians 12:3
1 Corinthians 12:3 • Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: • and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.
The Work of Spirit • The Holy Spirit is God’s agent of: • Regeneration • Conversion • Justification • Adoption • Sanctification • Illumination of Scripture

Believers must Walk after the Spirit walk Romans 8:1 • There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Believers Must Not Ephesians 4:29-30 • Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-19 • Rejoice evermore. • Pray without ceasing. • In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. • Quench not[put out] the Spirit.
Understanding the Spirit’s Work • Acts contains nearly 60 specific references to the Holy Spirit’s work in the life of the potential convert or the believer. • Some commentators have suggested that the book of Acts should be called the “Acts of the Holy Spirit.”
Let’s look at Stephen’s Understanding of the Holy Spirit’s work Acts 7:51
God’s Agent of Change The Holy Spirit has a specific ministry that must NOT be ignored! • Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

Hebrews 10:27 Is this just any kind of sin? • But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
Hebrews 10:28-29 • He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
Unbelievers must be concerned about committing this sin and going beyond contempt of the message that Jesus of Nazareth is both Lord and the Son of God because of the irrevocableness of their choice.
In Hebrews 6:4-6 We see a similar connection between the Holy Spirit and the Son of God.
Hebrews 6:4-6 • For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
Question Can someone who is authentically born again commit this unpardonable sin?
1 John 1:7 • But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Romans 1:28 • And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, • God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient • And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, • God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.
In 2 Timothy 3:7-9 These men may be guilty of this unpardonable sin.
2 Timothy 3:7-9 • Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.
Question • Are you walking in the Spirit • Are you grieving the Spirit • Are you quenching the Spirit • Are you lukewarm in your walk with the Spirit? • Are you resisting the Holy Spirit?
