  1. Paraphrasing without Plagiarizing

  2. What does it mean to plagiarize?

  3. Key Points for Paraphrasing • Accurately use information from original passage • Restate that information in your own words and own sentence structure • Cite where you got the information

  4. Why is paraphrasing important? • Explain information in a different way • Easier for your audience to understand • More concise • Do not have to constantly quote the author • Helps you better understand information

  5. Steps in Paraphrasing • Read and re-read the passage until you understand it completely • Set the original passage aside • Write down the “gist” of the passage in YOUR OWN WORDS • Put any unique words or phrases in quotations marks if you are going to use them • Compare your paraphrased version with the original - Is the information correct? - Do you restructure the passage completely or do you only change a few words around? • Cite where you got the information

  6. What’s wrong with this passage? According to “Michael Jordan” in the Encyclopedia of World Biography, Michael Jordan “did not make the high school basketball team as a sophomore In his native Wilmington, North Carolina, but did make the team as a junior” (Encyclopedia of World Biography). He must have overcome a lot of obstacles and had great talent because “he accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of North Carolina” (Encyclopedia of World Biography). Eventually, Jordan was “drafted by the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball association (NBA) as the 3rd overall pick of the 1984 draft” (Encyclopedia of World Biography). However, he did not join the Bulls right away. Instead, he “was a member of the Summer 1984 United States Olympic basketball team that easily won the gold medal in Los Angeles, California” (Encyclopedia of World Biography).

  8. What’s wrong with this passage? Michael Jordan actually did not make his high school basketball team when he was a sophomore in his hometown Wilmington, North Carolina, but did make the team as a junior. After high school, he accepted a basketball scholarship to the University of North Carolina. Eventually, Jordan was drafted by the Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball association (NBA) as the 3rd overall pick in 1984. First, however, he was a member of the Summer 1984 United States Olympic basketball team that won the gold medal in Los Angeles, California without much trouble at all (Encyclopedia of World Biography).

  10. Anything wrong with this one? Despite being cut from his high school basketball team during his freshman year, Michael Jordan went on to have a successful basketball career. His talent showed when he made the team his sophomore year and earned a scholarship to play basketball at the University of North Carolina. His career did not end after college either; Jordan joined two teams in 1995. He “easily won the gold medal” with the United States Olympic basketball team and he was drafted by the Chicago Bulls (Encyclopedia of World Biography).

  13. It’s your turn!Original Passage: Students frequently overuse direct quotation in taking notes, and as a result they overuse quotations in the final [research] paper. Probably only about 10% of your final manuscript should appear as directly quoted matter. Therefore, you should strive to limit the amount of exact transcribing of source materials while taking notes. Lester, James D. Writing Research Papers. 2nd ed. (1976): 46-47.

  14. Example Answer In research papers students often quote excessively, failing to keep quoted material down to a desirable level. Since the problem usually originates during note taking, it is essential to minimize the material recorded verbatim (Lester 46-47).

  15. Choose one of these: While the Sears Tower is arguably the greatest achievement in skyscraper engineering so far, it's unlikely that architects and engineers have abandoned the quest for the world's tallest building. The question is: Just how high can a building go? Structural engineer William LeMessurier has designed a skyscraper nearly one-half mile high, twice as tall as the Sears Tower. And architect Robert Sobel claims that existing technology could produce a 500-story building. From Ron Bachman, "Reaching for the Sky." Dial (May 1990): 15. The twenties were the years when drinking was against the law, and the law was a bad joke because everyone knew of a local bar where liquor could be had. They were the years when organized crime ruled the cities, and the police seemed powerless to do anything against it. Classical music was forgotten while jazz spread throughout the land, and men like Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, and Count Basie became the heroes of the young. The flapper was born in the twenties, and with her bobbed hair and short skirts, she symbolized, perhaps more than anyone or anything else, America's break with the past. From Kathleen Yancey, English 102 Supplemental Guide (1989): 25.
