  1. The Smart Enterprise of the Future: Managing Project Expertise for More Effective Decision-making and Results Bryan Davis President of the Kaieteur Institute for Knowledge Management. PMI SCC's 6th Biennial International Project Management Conference “BRIDGING THE GAP: Strategic Thought Transformed Through Project Management”

  2. ABSTRACT Title: The Smart Enterprise of the Future: Managing Project Expertise for More Effective Decision-making and Results To achieving successful project outcomes in today’s increasingly complex and fast-changing environment, project leaders have to have the capability to skilfully harness and mobilize knowledge resources. Doing so requires greater insight, skill, and precision in knowledge engagement, knowledge transfer and performance measurement. This presentation will use interesting case examples to illustrate several knowledge problems which project managers invariably face. It will share some fresh ways to think about several interesting recurring challenges such as: · How to transfer tacit knowledge and tribal know-how? · How to impart wisdom and experience inter-generationally, and across your enterprise? · How to close the gap between knowing and doing? · How to deal with culture and knowledge politics? The presenter will review a few selective and proven practices which can be used to deal with these issues in the most effective manner. The argument will be advanced that having an open mindset, understanding network science, and adopting a performance system which includes enhanced metrics, are core skills which Project Managers need to learn. These are new leadership lessons applicable to and of great value to all Project Managers. 10. What Business Are We In? http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/33/one.html “There are two keys to innovation. The first is the ability to think beyond relatively conventional paradigms and to examine traditional constraints using nontraditional thinking. You have to be able to go outside your own frame of reference and find another way to look at a problem. Before I founded Federal Express, overnight delivery didn't exist on a national scale. My innovation involved taking an idea from the telecommunications and banking industries, and applying that idea to the transportation business. Using a central clearinghouse, along with a hub-and-spoke system of dissemination, enabled us to deliver, point-to-point, anywhere in the United States -- absolutely, positively overnight. The second key to innovation is the ability to discern the important issues and to keep your real goal in view. I don't think that we understood our real goal when we first started Federal Express. We thought that we were selling the transportation of goods; in fact, we were selling peace of mind. When we finally figured that out, we pursued our goal with a vengeance. We provided each of our drivers with a handheld computer and a transmitting device. We made it possible for our customers to track their packages right from their desktops” Frederick W. Smith, Chairman, President, and CEO FedEx Corp. 11. Theory & Action Clayton M. Christensen is the architect of and the world’s foremost authority on disruptive innovation http://thehighvelocityedge.mhprofessional.com/apps/ab/read-an-excerpt/foreword-by-clayton-christensen/ “The term theory gets a bum rap among most managers because managers are practical people and theory normally is associated with the word theoretical, which has a connotation of impracticality. However, a good theory is consummately practical because a well-researched theory is a contingent statement of what causes what and why. The law of gravity, for example, actually is a theory. It is extremely useful because it allows us to predict in advance, without having to collect experimental data, that if we step off a cliff, we will fall. Good theories allow us to predict the result of an action accurately. Even though most managers do not think of themselves as being theory-driven, they are in reality voracious consumers of theory. Every time managers make a plan or take an action, it is based on some theory or mental model in the back of their minds that leads them to believe that the action being taken will lead to the desired result. The problem is that managers are rarely aware of the theories they are using and often use the wrong theories for the situations in which they find themselves.” PMI SCC's 6th Biennial International Project Management Conference “BRIDGING THE GAP: Strategic Thought Transformed Through Project Management”

  12. Mental Models • Peter Senge’s book The Fifth Discipline identifies five core disciplines required of a learning organization: personal mastery, mental models, shared vision, team learning, and systems thinking. • mental models are: "deeply ingrained assumptions, generalizations, or even pictures and images that influence how we understand the world and how we take action."
