tHe changes of Reported speech • Simple Present becomesSimple Past Tense ex: - (DS)Doni said, “ I help my father after school.” (IS) Doni said that he helped his father after school. - (DS) Teacher said, “ we study grammar once a month.” (IS) teacher said that we studied grammar once a month.
2. Present Continuous Tense becomesPast Continuous Tense Ex: - (DS) Aliya said, “ I’m studying English now.” (IS) Aliya said that she was studying English then. - (DS) They said, “We are having our lunch.” (IS) They said that they were having their lunch.
3. Present Perfect becomesPast Perfect Ex: - (DS) Iman said, “I have lost my key.” (IS) Iman said (that) he had lost his key. - (DS) Teacher said to her students, “You have studied about Recount text.” (IS) Teacher said to her students that they had studied about recount text.
4. Simple Future becomesPast Future tense Ex: - (DS) Anisa said, “I will be home at 6 pm.” (IS) Anisa said that she would be home at 6 pm. - (DS) He said, “I will go to Surabaya next month.” (IS) He said that he would go to Surabaya the following month.
5. Future Continuous becomesPast Future Continuous Ex: - (DS) They said, “We will be doing our homework at Sunday morning.” (IS) They said that they would be doing their homework at Sunday morning.
6. Simple Past Tense becomesPast Perfect Tense Ex: - (DS) She said, “I watched this movie last night.” (IS) She said that she had watched that movie the night before.
For interrogative sentence Ex: - (DS) he asked me, “why do you speak English?” (IS) he asked me why I spoke English. - (DS) teacher asked me, “where is your house?” (IS) teacher asked me where my house was.
YES/NO QUESTION We use whether or if for Yes/No question ex: -(DS) He asked me, “do you speak English?” (IS) he asked me whether I spoke English. - (DS) teacher asked her students, “did you do your homework?” (IS) teacher asked them if they had done their homework.
For imperative and prohibition • Imperative : to + infinitive (V1) ex: - (DS) teacher asked, me “open the door.” (IS) teacher asked me to open the door. • Prohibition : not + to infinitive (V1) Ex: (DS) mother warned me, “don’t drink cold water.” (IS) mother warned me not to drink cold water.
EXCEPTION For Direct Speech that has reporting word like Simple Present, Future Tense and Present Perfect Tense, and they want to be changed into Indirect speech , So there’s no any changes for that. Ex: - (DS) He says, “I go to office everyday.” (IS) He says that he goes to office everyday. -(DS) She says, “ I am making a cake.” (IS) She says that she is making a cake.
- (DS) they have said, “The boy wasn’t lazy.” (IS) they have said that the boy wasn’t lazy.
EXERCISE Change these sentences into Reported Speech ! 1.She said, “I am thinking of going to live in Semarang.” 2. He says, “My father is in hospital.” 3. She asked me, “have you sent it to my email?” 4. Teacher asked her students, “don’t play truant.” 5. Ahmad said, “I will meet her next week.”
6. Sasa told, “I am writing a story. now” 7. He asked me, “do you have a pencil?” 8. He says, “I’m so hungry.” 9. She said, “ I have watched this movie.” 10. She warned me, “don’t touch that flower.”
