INTRODUCTION • In September 2000, under the aegis of the United Nations, 170 heads of state and Government unanimously adopted a comprehensive Millennium Declaration committing their nations to partnership for a “peaceful prosperous and just World”. • The Millennium Declaration generated the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) a set of concrete, quantitative and time- bound targets to be reached by the year 2015 through coherent, coordinated and mutually supportive actions. The MDGs address the problem of the people”. • This global consensus, is a culmination of a long history of international efforts to promote sustainable and equitable development represents a unique opportunity to forge a global partnership to address poverty in all its dimension- not only in terms of hunger, diseases, illiteracy, poor housing, discrimination and vulnerability.

Reduce Child Mortality. • Goal 5. Improve Maternal Health. • Goal 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. • Goal 7. Ensure Environment Sustainability • Goal 8. Develop a global Partnership for Development.

EXISTING ACTIVITIES (MDGs/DRG) SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT SECT • Advocacy on gender issues. • Capacity building for gender focal persons. • Scaling up of Infrastructures in Orphanages and child Institutions. • Procurement of basic amenities for equipping orphanages and child institutions.
CONT. EDUCATION SECRETARIAT • Construction of UBE 130 classroom/provision of 130 sets of classroom furniture. • Procurement of teaching materials. • Capacity building for teachers comprising , Head Teachers, Asst. Head teachers and subject teachers. • Construction of 168 units of VIP toilets.
CONT. AGRIC AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT SECRETARIAT • Production of Improve seeds/seedlings for distribution. • Development of integrated pest management program. • Strengthening of research, extension farmers linkage- emphasis on youth and women farmers group. • Establishment of 2 Nos each of improved agro processing demonstration centres for cassava and rice. • Construction of 1 No silo storage grains.
CONT. HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES SECRETARIAT • Construction and equipping of six(6) wards Health system ( a primary health centre fed by six (6) clinics). • Upgrading facilities for emergency obstetrics care in Nyanya and Gwarimpa hospitals. • Construction of Health post in eight (8) resettlement centres. • Training of doctor, midwives and other health workers on life saving skills.

PROJECT WEBSITE The project web address www.mdgfctaabuja.org • Website to track project implementation • Website to give up-to-date baseline data of FCT communities • Website design as a transparency initiative of the FCTA MDG implementation.

BUDGET REVIEW • Inline with the agreement to revisit use of counterpart funding; • About 93 million Naira has been reallocated to upgrade projects • 17 Million Naira saved from Bills reassessment also reallocated • -12 more communities were given water schemes • -92primary schools with Boreholes and; • -78 VIP- toilets were added
STAKEHOLDERS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF MDGS IN THE FCT. • Stakeholders are all the people and institutions within the FCT that will be impacted or influenced by the MDG program. They include the FCTA and its agencies, the Area Councils, the communities, the international donor agencies, the NGOs and the private sector.
FCTA & ITS AGENCIES • Prescribing the minimum standard for the MDGs Projects. • Provision of basic data required for effective implementation of MDGs projects/ programs. • Organising capacity strengthening programs for other .stakeholders. • Liaising with donor agencies and other development partners in matters relating to MDGs. • Supervising & monitoring the implementation of MDGs projects & program. • Encouragement & stimulation of the active participation of the private sector, non-governmental and voluntary organizations, as well as local communities in the scheme.
AREA COUNCILS • Support the FCTA in providing capacity training programs for other stakeholders. • Ensuring there are no unnecessary diversions of facilities meant for the MDGs project. • Creating adequate awareness among communities • Providing adequate security for all MDGs projects in their Area Councils. • Ensuring the maintenance of standards through adequate monitoring of the MDGs projects. • Providing counterpart funding for the execution of MDGs progamme in their domain
COMMUNITIES • Participation and ensuring the security and maintenance of both ongoing and completed projects. • Providing necessary baseline data on the programs initiated for their communities. • Identifying with the problems and success in the realisation of the MDGs. • Participation in monitoring of projects within their communities. • Ownership and sustaining the service delivery level

THE PRIVATE SECTORS • Supporting the FCTA in provision of expertise for MDGs. • Ensuring that they gear their program towards the realisation of the MDGs. • Adhere to the principles of corporate social responsibilities

Hoping for brighter future • Integrated planning process that is community driven through LEEDS and FEEDS. • In 2years government will provide Water in 75% of the rural communities in FCT, provide access to basic health & education to 85% of the communities within 30mins.to 1hr. trekking distance.
