Ulysses S. Grant • Was a chief for Zachary Taylor in the Mexican war. • Was the 21st graduate of West Point military academy out of 39. • Real name is Hiram Ulysses Grant, but there was a mix-up in West Point, and then he was Ulysses S. Grant. • General/Major from July 1861 to January 1868 • Was the President of the United States for 1 term. • Died of heart cancer • Earned $450,000 in his life.
Robert E. Lee • He gradated from West Point without a single Demerit. • Was a good friend of Ulysses S. Grant. • Had many war nicknames • Declined being a general for the Union, but stayed with his homeland in the Confederacy. • He defeated a Union army twice his army’s size. • Almost invaded Washington D.C. twice, but was stopped at Antietam and Gettysburg. • Died because of heart disease.
Comparing the generals • Were both generals from West Point military academy. • Both died of diseases. • And both were picked to be Union generals (Lee declined though). • Both were brigadier Generals out of West Point. • Graduated from West Point in the same year. • Both were MAJOR Civil war generals.
