What does cell respiration provide? • ATP • Carbon Skeletons
What are the two types of cell respiration? • Aerobic respiration • Anaerobic respiration
Aerobic vs. Anaerobic Respiration Aerobic Anaerobic -Doesn’t use oxygen -Fermentation is one type of anaerobic respiration. -Starts with a single 6-carbon glucose molecule. • Uses oxygen • Raw materials are carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. • Starts with a single 6-carbon glucose molecule.
What are the stages of Aerobic Respiration? • Glycolysis • Krebs Cycle • Electron Transport System (ETS)
What is Glycolysis? • Glycolysis is the breakdown of glucose to form ATP and two pyruvates. • It reduces NAD+ to NADH, carrying a hydrogen to the ETS. • Uses two molecules of ATP and a net gain of 2 molecules.
What is the Krebs Cycle? • CoA attaches to a 2-carbon molecule to get it into the Krebs cycle. • The completion of the decomposition and oxidation of glucose. • Makes ATP, NADH, FADH2.CO2 is given off as a waste product.
Electron Transport System (ETS) • The NADH and FADH2 drop off the hydrogen ions and are transferred into the intermembrane space through the cytochromes. • The hydrogen ions are the transferred throught the ATP synthetase providing just enough energy to form molecules of ATP. • H+ and e- bond together with O2 to form a water molecule.
