8th Grade Integrated Science Mr. Desai Introduction to Matter
What is Matter? (10 minutes) • Open the “What Is Matter?” word document to see the list of items on our class page • Determine whether each item is an example of “Matter” or “Not Matter.” • Highlight all of the items that are “Matter.” • Leave all of the items that are “Not Matter” unchanged. • Based on your classification, write what things in the matter category have in common on a separate sheet of paper. • Remember that these properties must apply to all things that are matter. • After completing this activity, wait for further instructions.
STOP HERE… • Until given further directions! When instructed, go on to read through the next 5 slides to get a brief overview of matter.
The Nature of Matter • Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. • Mass is the amount of matter in an object. • Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. • The word matter comes from the Latin word materia, meaning “material” or “stuff.” • Examples of matter: You can observe matter easily with your senses…rocks, trees, bicycles, air… Basically everything and anything! • The only thing that wouldn’t be matter would be energy (sunlight, heat, electricity). --- can’t be matter because they don’t have mass or volume.
Physical Properties of Matter • A property that can be observed or measured; a characteristic.

Characteristic Properties of Matter Because characteristic properties are usually not affected by physical changes, they can be used to identify matter • boiling point • melting point • solubility • conductivity • hardness • pH • flammability • density
Matter: Mass, Volume, & Density • Visit the link provided at the top of your handout to complete the fill in portion. • Once, you complete this side of the handout, return back here and proceed to the next slide.
How is matter measured? • Visit BrainPOP! “Measuring Matter” • Watch the video clip • Take notes/write a summary of the video • Complete the “classic quiz” at the end and submit your quiz results for a grade to ddesai@burlington-nj.net
Matter: Mass, Volume, & Density • Now you are ready to begin the virtual lab! • Follow the link given at the top of your handout and click on Virtual Density Lab to begin. • Move onto the Density PowerPoint on our class page once finished with the lab.
