Project 9th Semester TDT4520 Program and Information Systems, Specialization Project ArTe www.artentnu.com www.letiziajaccheri.com
project • By OSS (Open Source Software) we mean those computer programs which can be used freely and whose source code is available for modification. We have chosen seven contemporary tools which are open source and which allow the user to produce pictures, animations, sound files, digital stories, and interactive installations. Arduino, Audacity, GIMP, Inkspace, Processing, Scratch, and TuxPaint are all instances of OSS technology for creativity. • The goal of this project is to specify precise research questions and to follow a systematic research process to enhance the state of the knowledge about OSS technology for creativity. • The candidate will start by studying the proposed tools and their use. Who does use which tool? How do users choose their tools? Why do users choose OSS tools? Which influence has software technology on the creative process? • This is the ideal project for students who are interested in creativity issues around Information Technology. It can be chosen by one or two students working as a team. Different students/ groups of students will work on different tools yet cooperating on the general framework and literature.
organization • Sylvia, Riccardo, Ivete, Kishore • Register again • A physical place where to work? • PC? • Minutes of each meeting • Document sharing between us and outside • Dropbox?, google?, it’s learning
research process Do Observe Evaluate Measure Record Analyze Start-again Write Read
Goal – research and practical • Research goal - Observe • Enhanced knowledge, usually a written document • Practical goal – Do • A concrete item, like a software program, or an exhibition, event with concrete people (children, seniors, industry, artists)
External actors/Context for the practical goal The Open Wall Trondheim Library ArTe Web site (wordpress) Industry (Cantega September 10th, Itovation events) arduinoLilyPad ++ Competitions like arselectronica ++ • K+K=K • Remida, meta.morph, Mesen • Scratch, arduino, reuse technology • First meeting 2th September • NTNU Fest • ArTime, NTNU women installation 14th and 15th September • Experts in Team 2011, Liv Arnesen, etc.
Goals • For whom? • Who is the user of the program I write? • Who is the visitor of my exhibition? • Who needs the knowledge I produce? For example for making a decision, or for designing a system. • How am I going to say that I have reached my goal at a given time? • Evaluation
Research process (choices) • Software technology • Practical goal • Research goal
Which software? • processing, arduino, scratch, wordpress, GIMP • for live performances and interactive installations • Fluxushttp://www.pawfal.org/fluxus/ • Pure Data http://puredata.info/ • Animatahttp://animata.kibu.hu/ • for multitouch devices • tischhttp://tisch.sourceforge.net/ • tbetahttp://ccv.nuigroup.com/ • for creating networks visualizations • gephihttp://gephi.org/
Which practical goal? • Make a processing program for an exhibition • Organize a processing workshop for children or senior
About the process • Whom to work with and for? • Team issues • when to work • when to ask for feedback
Which data to collect/study? • Mailing lists • available programs • interviews with artists, audience, etc. • pictures, videos • How to analyze data? • See TDT39
plan and documentation • Where to publish (ICT, arts, ICT&art, education, dissemination, ) • Constraints and formality • Future work • Master, PhD, professional career

About research questions • These are only example. • Are these questions good? What do we really want to learn and communicate to other people?
