  3. Drifting Buoy Network • Buoys in operation on September 1st, 2015: • 93 buoys fully funded by EUMETNET + 38 NOAA buoys upgraded • plus 4 Arctic buoys fully funded by EUMETNET • plus 7 buoys funded by AtlantOS Target Nb of buoys in operation atthe end of each month

  6. E-SURFMAR Status (Sept. 2015) • Drifting buoys  • Longer lifetimes: 5 buoys, still in operation, overpassed 1000 days of life • Reuse of recovered buoys: 9 buoys refurbished/redeployed + 2 deck drifters • Good distribution over North Atlantic and Arctic (previous slides) • Interesting deployments since last meeting: • in North Atlantic by tallship Hermione: 9 buoys carefully deployed • in Labrador and Baffin Bay (three opportunities: 6 buoys deployed + 4 on route) • in the Arctic: deployment of 8 buoys started two weeks ago • for AtlantOS: 8 buoys deployed in 2 passes. One failed. Seven are operating • Moored buoys: Cabo Silleiro operational back since Sept. 1st after problems in summer.

Relevant 2015’ meetings (1) • JCOMM/SOT-8 (Cape Town - April) & JCOMM/PMO-5 (Chile - July) • Opportunities to show E-SURFMAR works to the world VOS community • Promotion of TurboWin, E-SURFMAR monitoring tools and the metadata database All of these now widely used in the world (great success for E-SURFMAR) • After NOAA, JMA plans to use TurboWin for their ships. The software, developed and maintained by KNMI with support from E-SURFMAR, becomes universally used • Promotion of EUCAWS station and E-SURFMAR ship-to-shore dataformats

  8. Relevant 2015’ meetings (2) • E-SURFMAR ET-12 (Rome, May) • Organized by ISPRA (third party) • Participation of IH, Portugal (new expert) • Participation of the two JCOMMOPS coordinators (DBCP and SOT) • Next meeting planned in Hamburg in mid-April, back to back with a EUCAWS workshop

Relevant 2015’ meetings (3) • JCOMM/DBCP-31 (Geveva - October) • will be held at WMO headquarters • important issue (OSM point of view): Migration to BUFR for buoy data (moored buoys most especially) • AtlantOS Kick Off (Brussels, June) • E-SURFMAR involved in WP3 (autonomous observing systems) and WP7 (data flow and data integration). • about 50% of the funding paid to EUMETNET by EC • next Work Package meetings planned in December OPT-6 Meeting - Adobe Connect – 14-15 September 2015

  12. EUCAWS Project (a long history close to completion) • Nov. 2007: PB-Obs asks E-SURFMAR to write specifications for S-AWS stations • June 2009: Specifications written. E-SURFMAR proposes to go ahead with a common call for tender. • 2010-2011: Work by administrative services to find the right way… • June 2012: Call for tender issued by EUMETNET • Nov. 2012: One manufacturer (Sterela) chosen among 5 bidders. Framework agreement signed by the parties (5 NMS only) • Feb. 2013: Sterela officially notified. First subsequent contract by Meteo-France for the developments and the purchase of three prototypes • Dec. 2014: Factory Acceptance Test succeeded (delay longer than 10 months) • Jan-Feb 2015: Site Acceptance Test on Ferry Armorique (ongoing) • June 2015: Delivery of the two other prototypes (to KNMI and DWD). Start of the Verification of Regular Service (VRS) • December 2015: End of the VRS. Series may be ordered • Mid-2016: delivery of the first series and installations

Status of Migration to BUFR (Sept. 2015) • Resulting from a TAC2BUFR conversion only • Native BUFR for half compressed messages, resulting from a FM13 to BUFR conversion for the others • Native BUFR only (high resolution data, metadata included…) • Native BUFR for Meteo-France S-AWS, resulting from a FM13 to BUFR conversion for the others Information on progress available on ECMWF wikisite OPT-6 Meeting - Adobe Connect – 14-15 September 2015

E-SURFMAR Plans (1) • Drifting buoys (in addition to routine tasks) • Deployment of 4 more drifters in the west of Greenland (ongoing) • Continuation of deployments for AtlantOS (6 buoys in December?) • Moored buoys • Replacement of K5 with an Hydrosphere/Mobilis design buoy? • Producing of BUFR messages using template TM315008 (as soon as possible) • VOS ships • Payment of 2015’ compensations (before the end of 2015) • Tests on TurboWin software fitted with dataformat #101 (before the end of 2015) • Distribution of this version of TurboWin to conventional VOS (2016) • End of Verification of Regular Service for EUCAWS (Dec. 2015) • Ordering of the first EUCAWS serial units (1st half of 2016) • Installation of these units (2nd half of 2016) Participation in YOPP (Year of Polar Prediction) in 2017-2019?

E-SURFMAR Plans (2) • Migration to BUFR • End of producing of TAC codes? • Other activities • Exploitation of E-SURFMAR impact study results in a revision of the network design which will be proposed for next programme phase • Compliance with INSPIRE directive (before the end of 2015) • Follow up of evaluation studies on HRSST buoys by GHRSST group • Handover process for the OSM: 12-month transition period starting today (Sept. 14th) with the arrival of Paul Poli in E-SURFMAR service team
