E-SURFMAR Main Objectives EUMETNET meets24 European Meteorological Services.Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom 17 out of them are participating in E-SURFMAR • To co-ordinate, optimise and progressively integrate the activities for surface marine observations within the EUCOS Operational framework • Main EUCOS aim : to optimise the ground observing system to improve Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) over Europe

Extension of the drifting buoy network • E-SAT agreed E-SURFMAR should extends its drifting buoy network in sparse areas north-eastwards and in a part of the Arctic Ocean • Norwegian and Greenland and Seas : Continuation of deployments from OWS Mike Use of any opportunities from Tromsø • Arctic : Which kind of buoys would be the most suitable in the Arctic ? ESURFMAR is interested by IABP tests (see picture) The aim is to get a cost effective buoy capable of operation in ice and open water through freeze/thaw cycles.
