Sports Industry • There are millions of participants in sports which then offers many opportunities for careers in sports management • Opportunities will include youth, high school, collegiate, and/or professional sports • These types of sports have many different types of games, activities, and events that need to be coordinated and managed by professionals • There are a many different types of career paths in sports – event management, facilities management, marketing, ticket sales, coaching, scouting, and many others???
Youth Sports • Millions of youth participate in many youth sports in the U.S. and in the world • These sports need many well-trained professionals to help organize and manage these types of organizations • Major types of youth sports organizations – Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), Little League Baseball, recreation dept., Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA/YWCA’s many others??? • Types of opportunities – coaching, administrators, event planners, facility directors, marketing, others???
High School Sports • Millions of boys and girls participate in H.S. sports in the U.S. per year • There is a need for professionally trained and educated H.S coaches and athletic administrators • H.S. sports organizations – individual schools, state associations, national organizations (NFHS) • Event planners for different types of high school sports events • Types of opportunities – coaching, athletic administrators, camp directors, officiating, others???
Collegiate Sports • Hundreds of thousands of college sports participants each year in colleges in the U.S. • College sports is a fast-growing part of the sports industry - $billions industry • Organizations – NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA • It is important to understand the different collegiate organizations and levels – rules, policies, etc. • NCAA levels: - Div. I – larger schools, highest competition, scholarships - Div. II – mid-sized classifications, some athletic scholarships - Div. III – small level of schools and competition, no athletic scholarships • Types of opportunities – coaching, athletic administration, marketing, academics, recruiting, intramurals and recreation, officiating, Bowl games and events, others???

Entertainment Industry • Entertainment is any activity which provides a diversion or permits people to amuse themselves in their leisure time, and may also provide fun, enjoyment and laughter • Entertainment industry is part of the tertiary sector of the economy and includes a large number of sub-industries devoted to entertainment • Examples of popular forms of entertainment include music, record labels, concerts, performing arts, theatre, vaudeville, comedy shows, movies, television, casinos, other??? • Types of career paths would include event management, facilities management, production, marketing, ticket sales, talent/entertainment agency, others???
Event Industry • Event management is the application of project management to the creation and development of large scale events • However, the formal event management industry has grown tremendously over the past 20 – 25 years • Professionals in the sports/entertainment industry need to understand the importance of event planning and management • Types of events include weddings, special events, festivals, conferences, ceremonies, formal parties, concerts, corporate events, conventions, other???
Event Industry (cont.) • The process of planning and coordinating the event is usually referred to as event planning • Planning would include budgeting, scheduling, site selection, acquiring necessary permits, coordinating transportation and parking, arranging for speakers or entertainers, arranging decor, event security, catering and emergency plans • The events industry now includes events of all sizes from the Olympicsdown to smaller events
