PRIORITY RESEARCH AREAS • Cold recycling (ETB & Foam): • Material design /material types • Validation of performance models • Active filler / binder content • Suitable materials for intersections • Asphalt overlays - comparison
PRIORITY LIST (con.) • Upgrading of gravel roads • Flexible surfacing for low-volume roads • Individual, new and innovative designs • Low-cost roads • Vehicle-pavement interaction related to dynamic loads and contact stresses • Concrete pavements • Stabilisation of sands
PRIORITISATION CRITERIA • Research need • Road Authority need • Funding availability • Complimentary benefits • Cost • Regional (SADC) benefits • Ease of logistics • Provision of supplementary information
ACTION PLAN • HVS to remain in Cape Town until October ‘03 to test N7 fast and LVRs • HVS to return to Gauteng in October ’03 to test concrete pavements on N4 toll plaza • CSIR/Gautrans to investigate the inclusion of dynamic loading into test sections • CSIR/KZN DoT to develop a proposal for a full-scale investigation of sand stabilisation (not necessarily including the HVS) • CSIR to submit a proposal to Gautrans re ETB sites (ETB section now on N7)
