  2. Emigrate or Immigrate? • Emigrate is to leave one’s home • We emigrated from Finland to our new home. • Immigrate is to come to a new home • We immigrated to the United States.

  16. Why Come To Michigan? • Family already here • Michigan is a lot like Finland • Jobs here were plentiful and familiar -- lumbering, farming and mining • Try for a better life • Farm land was free or inexpensive if you ‘proved it up’

  19. What Did You Learn? • What is ‘geography of place’? • What is the difference between ‘emigration’ and ‘immigration’? • List the reasons we have discovered as to WHY people leave their HOME and move to a new land.

  20. It’s a Matter of Place • If you had to move, where would you go? • Where would you feel most comfortable? • Which factors would draw you to move there? • Would you emigrate? • Do you think life was easy? Why?

  21. Assignment • Choose an area of the country. • Research it. • Find out if you would like to live there. • Create a PowerPoint presentation on your findings, your decision and your reasoning. • Use the rubric provided to create the best presentation you can.
