Ways the Br. gov’t and social welfare changed in the 1800s: • Voting Restrictions- only property owners could vote; bribes and intimidation were common • The Reform Bill of 1832- gave middle-class a voice in gov’t • Social and Economic change- working conditions reform, slavery was abolished, steps toward free trade • Chartist Movement- universal male suffrage, secret ballot, equalized parliamentary representation

  3. II. Policies of Disraeli and Gladstone: • Disraeli- focused on foreign affairs and expanding the Br. empire B. Gladstone- concerned with domestic and financial affairs

  4. III. Changes in Br. gov’t and social welfare in the 1900s: • Lords lost veto power • House of Commons members got salary

  5. IV. Changes that occurred in the Br. Empire during the 1800s and 1900s: • Canada- 4 provinces w/ own legislature • Australia- penal colony; Aborigines were pushed from land, died from new diseases • New Zealand- self gov’t, but disastrous for Maori
