Phases of First Year Teachers’ Attitudes Towards TeachingFrom a study by the New Teacher Center Santa Cruz Anticipation Anticipation Reflection Rejuvenation Survival Disillusionment
Kentucky’s Goals • To encourage beginning teachers to become more accountable for student achievement through an emphasis on data about students and their learning. • To help teachers link instructional practice to how learning can be improved and supported.
What is the purpose of KTIP? • Provides mentoring and support during the 1st year • Helps beginning teachers develop a foundation for life long professional growth • Focuses on learning outcomes • Reflects on and analyzes instruction and assessment results
What is the Purpose of the Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA)? Provides evidence that your teaching efforts are: • Student-Centered • Data Driven • Continuously Improving
TPA allows us to address essential questions: • What is effective teaching? • How do we know when we see it? • How do we measure or assess it? • How do we guide and assist our new colleagues to be effective teachers?
What is the Teacher Performance Assessment? • 3 Cycles completed over two semesters • 1st semester = Orientation + Cycle I observations • 2nd semester = Cycle II & Cycle III observations • Lesson planning (KTIP format) • Observations of Instruction • Task Analysis (KTIP format) • Portfolio • Spend twenty-five hours per semester with the Mentor Teacher.
Who is on the KTIP Committee? • Teacher Intern – Beginning teacher • Mentor Teacher – A full time teacher who usually teaches in the same school & same specialty area (but not always!) • Teacher Educator – Assigned from the teacher education program for that region. May be a retired teacher / principal / teacher educator • The Principal
How Should your Mentor Teacher Provide Support for your Professional Growth and development: • Collaboratively plan lessons with you. • Analyze student work with you. • Model good teaching practices and explain their rationale for professional decisions. • Introduce you to key people. • Inform you of important dates well in advance. • Share and help you obtain resources • Provide meaningful and frank feedback.
KTIP Portfolio • Hardcopy • Organized into the 3 cycles • Designed to show evidence of meeting the New Teacher Standards that are not observable during instruction • NTS III – Lesson Planning • NTS II – Classroom management • NTS IV - Assessment • NTS V - Reflection • NTS VI - Collaboration • NTS VII – Professional Growth Plan / PD • NTS IX – Technology • Includes a detailed description of the school setting, demographics, and community at Cycle I, II & III
Questions • How is the observation assessed? • Each standard is evaluated by each committee member at each Cycle • The committee comes to a consensus on the combined score for each standard • The intern must MEET each standard by the end of Cycle III • Can a teacher fail KTIP? • Yes, but the intern may have another year • The school does not have to renew the intern’s contract
How Does EKU Prepare You for KTIP? • Our programs are aligned to New Teacher Standards & KY Program of Studies • You have had practice identifying descriptors of New Teacher Standards (through our e-portfolio) • We require that you use the KTIP Professional Growth Plan throughout the program • We require that you use the KTIP Lesson planning / task analysis process
