Durer-German Renaissance Artist German painter, printmaker, and engraver. Famous for altar pieces, religious works, portraits, copper engravings, and woodcuts. 1st great Protestant painter, rejected Gothic art and philosophy. He called Martin Luther, “that Christian man who has helped me out of great anxieties.”
Durer 1.Began career in Nuremberg with father, a goldsmith. 2. Was already a painter by 1484. 3. Apprenticed with a printmaker in 1486 and began to work with woodcuts and copper engravings. 4. Durer traveled twice to Italy-1494 and 1505. The artists of Italy greatly influenced him in regards to color and form.
Durer 1496-publicized a portfolio of woodcuts called The Apocalypse of St. John. This portfolio may have been an expression of support for the Reformation. Nuremberg was a city that embraced the principles of the Reformation.
