Type of Organism present – Flora & Fauna • Polar bears, seals and whales are the only other mammals, which live in the Arctic Ocean.
Area (km2), Length , Width, Volume and Size • Total is 14.056 million sq km including tributary water bodies. Without tributary water bodies is 5.4 million sq km • The coastline length is 45,389 km • The volume of the ocean is 9.6 million cu km or 4.1 million cu mi • The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and the shallowest of all the five major oceans
Average & Maximum Depth and outlet – (drainage) • The average depth is 3,450 feet (1,050m). • The maximum depth is 17,900ft(5,450 m) • Outlet: There are only a few rivers that are outlets to the Arctic Ocean. Some of these rivers include: (from Asia is Ob’, Yenisey, and Lena, and in North America the Mackenzie River)
Interesting Facts • The deepest point is 17,881 feet (5,450m) • Arctic was named after a constellation that the Greeks called Arktos. • The Arctic is mostly surrounded by land. • Most of the Arctic Ocean is over 1000 m deep and is continuously covered with ice whose thickness varies between 1-10 m. About one third of the Arctic Ocean is shallow, i.e. continental shelf.
