Our Project The AEWC-ELI Partnership • 2003 National Research Council report on Cumulative Environmental Effects of Oil and Gas Activities on Alaska’s North Slope: identified the need for a comprehensive plan for Arctic oil and gas development • 2008 ELI feasibility report on implementing ecosystem-based management in the U.S. Arctic Beaufort Sea Chukchi Sea Bering Sea Partnership objective • Ensure long-term ecosystem health and resilience so that subsistence hunting can continue in the face of changing conditions

Our Project • APPROACH • Provide US Arctic community with an understanding of and tools to develop and implement marine spatial planning and ecosystem-based management • Increase policy- and decision-maker understanding of the unique aspects of US Arctic ocean and coastal management Research Education & Outreach • Seminar (March 2010) • Handbook (pending)

But how do you ensure meaningful participation mechanisms that not only give voice to the communities but ensure their input and knowledge is incorporated?
