Objectives: • Lesson 1: Winter weather day 1: Winter weather words. • Lesson 2: Winter weather day 2: Today’s temperature. • Lesson 3: Winter weather day 3: Different types of Winter weather; pros and cons. • Lesson4: Winter weather day 4: Winter clothing. • Lesson 5: Winter weather day 5: Follow up.

  3. Lesson 1 • Weather vocabulary (snow, blizzard, sleet, rain, windy drizzling, flurry, fog, frost, forecast, hail, icy, slush, etc.) • Use this day of Winter weather to learn the vocabulary used during the winter months and what all the words mean. • TEKS- (8) Reading/vocabulary development. The student develops an extensive vocabulary. The student is expected to: (A) discuss meanings of words and develop vocabulary through meaningful/concrete experiences (K-2)

  4. Lesson 2 • Today’s temperature • In groups the class will observe the classroom thermometer and use the thermometer worksheet to record what they concluded. • With their groups they will discuss what different temperatures mean and how the cold makes them feel. • TEKS-(12) Reading inquiry/research. (E) interpret and use graphic sources of information (2-3); (H) draw conclusions from information gathered (K-3). (2) Scientific processes. (C) Compare results of investigations with what students and scientists know about the world; (D) Gather information (E) Construct reasonable explanations and draw conclusions (F) Communicate explanations about investigations.

  5. Lesson 3 • As a class we will discuss the different types of winter weather and all the pros and cons that come along with the cooler months of the year. • We will write all of these examples on the board and discuss them thoroughly. • Essential Questions include “How do we know that it’s winter?”, “What do we wear?”, “What do we do for fun?”, and “What do we like/dislike about winter weather?”

  6. Lesson 4 • As a class we will discuss the winter weather clothing necessary to stay warm. • We will use our descriptive words to do the mittens worksheet. • Each student will write 3-5 sentences about their descriptions of winter weather. Although the sentences do not have to rhyme, this will be considered their winter poem! • TEKS- (14) Writing/purposes. The student writes for a variety of audiences and purposes, and in various forms. The student is expected to: (A) write to record ideas and reflections (K-3); (15) Writing/penmanship/capitalization/punctuation. (A) gain increasing control of aspects of penmanship such as pencil grip, paper position, stroke, and posture, and using correct letter formation, appropriate size, and spacing (2)

  7. Lesson 5 • As a class we will discuss everything we have learned about this week about winter weather. • All of the students’ thermometer worksheets that were done during the week will be posted on the classroom project wall. • All of the mittens worksheets along with the students’ winter poems will be sent home so they can show their parents.
