  27. Nice Job! If you can multiply & divide by 10 (or any power of 10), then the metric system will be easy for you.

  28. THE METER The meter is the starting point for the metric system. START

  29. Here’s a meter stick!

  30. It takes 10 decimeters to make up 1 meter.

  31. It takes 10 centimeters to make up 1 decimeter.

  32. If 1 meter = 10 decimetersand1 decimeter = 10 centimetersthen how many centimeters make up 1 meter?

  33. That’s right!1 meter = 100 centimeters

  34. 100centimeters = 1 meter

  35. It takes 10 millimeters to make up 1 centimeter. Boy, that’s small!

  36. If 1 meter = 10 decimetersand1 decimeter = 10 centimetersand1centimeter = 10 millimetersthen how many millimeters make up 1 meter?

  37. That’s right!1000 millimeters = 1 meter

  38. It takes 10 millimeters to make up 1 centimeter. Millimeters are so small that they almost run together.

  39. Now let’s take a closer look at some measuring devices.

  40. This is a magnified image of a ruler/meter stick. 1 2 3 4 This is one centimeter.

  41. This is a magnified image of a ruler/meter stick. 1 2 3 4 This is half of a centimeter.

  42. This is a magnified image of a ruler/meter stick. 1 2 3 4 This is one millimeter.

  43. This key measures 3 cm. 1 2 3 4

  44. Or you could say that it measures 30 mm. 1 2 3 4

  45. This key measures 2.5 cm. 1 2 3 4

  46. Or, you could say that it measures 25 mm. 1 2 3 4

  47. 1 2 3 4 This toy car measures 4.2 cm.

  48. 1 2 3 4 Or, you could say it measures 42 mm.

  49. The metric system deals with powers of 10 1 meter = 10 decimeters = 100 centimeters = 1000 millimeters

  50. How many centimeters make up 2 meters?
