Protists Chapter 7 Section 3
What is a protist? • Protists are eukaryotes that cannot be classified as animals, plants, or fungi. • All protists live in moist areas. • Most are unicellular, but some are multicellular. • Some are heterotrophs, some are autotrophs.
Three Types of Protists • Animal- Like Protists • Plantlike Protists • FunguslikeProtists
Animal-Like Protists • Like animals, animal-like protists are heterotrophs, and most are able to move from place to place to obtain food. • They are unicellular. • Some move by pseudopods- temporary bulges in cell. • Some move by cilia- hairlike projections that move in a wavelike motion.
Animal Like Protists • Some move by a flagella- long whiplike tail that helps them move. • Some are parasites and feed on other organisms.
Plantlike Protists • Commonly called algae. • They are autotrophs. • Some are unicellular, some are multicellular. • Diatoms and Dinoflagellates are also protists.
Plantlike Protists • Other protists include Euglenoids, red algae, brown algae, green algae
FunguslikeProtists • They are heterotrophs, have cell walls, use spores to reproduce. • A spore is a tiny cell that is able to grow into a new organism.
