Though you may think that there is only one media institution* that makes all music magazines. You are wrong. As with all media texts like films and television programmes they are made by a lot of different companies. *Institution- Organisation/ Company.
Conglomerate Company: A conglomerate company is a large company that makes mainstream* magazines. Independent Company: An independent company is a smaller organization that make niche* magazines. Public service company: The only type of company that doesn’t work like the other companies. For example the BBC is funded by public licence fee. The reason behind this is because John Reith (1922) the founder of the BBC introduced that BBC had to do three things: Educate Inform Entertain *Mainstream- Means to be well known/ Popular. *Niche- Means small specialised.
Some examples of music genres that may be classed as being ‘mainstream’ would be: Rock Pop Indie Some examples of music genres that may be classed as being ‘niche’ would be: Country Classical Heavy Metal A Conglomerate company is made up of loads of subsidiaries, this means that it is a company made up from loads of smaller companies. The best part about being a conglomerate business is that you get more money, you have a larger target audience and you also have your own brand*. A independent company isn’t made up of subsidiaries, this means that the magazine can be cheaper, free, local, specialises and advertising pages. Brand*- Corporate Identity.
