RAP: New Deal Goals • Using your lists of New Deals, place each New Deal in one of the three goal areas: Relief, Recover, and Reform. Then be prepared to defend the placement of each New Deal. Relief Recovery Reform
Learning Objective • Explain the varied reaction of radicals, conservatives, the middle class, the Supreme Court, blacks, women, and labor to the New Deal;
Early Critics • Huey Long (Kingfish): “share the wealth” - tax the wealthy heavily and redistribute to the poor • Father Charles E. Coughlin (Radio Priest): wanted stronger action against “banking interests” • Dr. Francis Townsend: wanted gov.t to pay every person over 60 yrs old $200 on the condition they spend it • Conservatives: Felt New Deal was excessive gov.t intervention into private enterprise
Other Reactions: • Supreme Court: • Ruled the NRA unconstitutional - gave Pres. Too much law-making power (1935) • Ruled the AAA unconstitutional due to tax used to fund it • Roosevelt - tried Court Packing - increased # of Supreme court justices from 9 to 15; not supported by anyone
Blacks: • Still facing problems of segregation, discrimination • Alarming # of lynchings • Did receive a few benefits from New Deals (Black support of Roosevelt increased with each election)
Women: • 1st woman cabinet member - Francis Perkins • Still faced lower wages, discrimination, unable to collect social security for domestic work • New Deals did the least amount to help this group!
Labor Unions: • Experienced period of growth due to some of the New Deals (Wagner Act) • Growth of the AFL and CIO (Congress of Industrial Organization that targeted unskilled labor) • First real use of sit-down strikes • OVERALL, PUBLIC OPINION - SPLIT TO THE EFFECT THAT NEW DEAL HAD ON SOCIETY - THE REAL PULL OUT OF THE DEPRESSION OCCURRED WITH OUTBREAK OF WWII!
WIO: Reactions to New Deal • Select two reactions to the New Deal; draw a symbol to represent that group’s feelings towards the New Deals, and briefly explain your choices.
