Question words • A question word can either be followed by a verb: -¿Dóndeestá mi coche? Where is my car? • Or it can be followed by a noun or subject: -¿Cuántosdólarestienes? How many dollars do you have?
QUESTION WORDS • Some question words change according to the gender and/or quantity of the word that follows. • For example: ¿Cuántasmanzanascomprastes? • Cuántobecomes cuántasbecause the word that follows it, manzanas, is feminine and plural.
Hacer time expressions • Used to describe something that began in the past and is still happening in the presentOR something that has already occurred and has ended. • In these expressions, hacer is always used in the third person singular form.
Formula For something that is still happening: Hace + time+ que+ present tense verb
-They have been studying Spanish for three years. Hace tres años queestudian español. -She has been running for five years. Hacecinco años que ella corre.
Negative time expressions Add a NO in front of the conjugated verb to make the expression negative: Hace+ time+ que+ NO +present tense verb -They have not studied Spanish for three years. Hacetresañosquenoestudianespañol.
Time expression questions To ask how long something has been taking place: ¿Cuánto + tiempo+ hace+ que +presenttense verb? -How long has she been running? ¿Cuántotiempohacequeellacorre?
Desdehace expressions • Another way to tell how long something has been happening is by using desdehace. • The literal translation of desde is “since.”
formula Present tense verb + desde hace + time
-I have been studying English for seven years. Yo estudio inglés desde hace siete años. -You have been cooking for two months. Cocinasdesde hace dos meses.
Negative desdehace expressions To make the expression negative, put a NO in front of the conjugated verb: NO +Present tense verb + desde hace + time -You have not cooked for two months. Nococinasdesde hace dos meses.
Desde questions To ask how long something has been taking place using desde: ¿Desde + cuándo +presenttense verb? -Howlonghaveyoubeenstudying English? ¿Desde cuándo estudias inglés?
Hace time with the preterite To say how long AGO something happened (meaning it has already ended): Hace + time + que + preterite form of verb
-Haceun año queestudié español. I studied Spanish one year ago. -Haceuna hora que se durmió. He fell asleep an hour ago.
Hace time questions with the preterite To ask how long ago something happened: ¿Cuánto + tiempo+ hace + que + preterite verb? -¿Cuánto tiempohaceque lo viste? How long ago did you see him?
