Hitler and the “Greater Germany” • In 1938, Germany and Austria joined together. • Hitler claimed that he was uniting all of the German speaking people into one “Greater Germany” • German speaking people in Czechoslovakia began to demand that they become a part of Germany, too. • But, Hitler couldn’t just waltz in and take Czechoslovakia…
Hitler and Czechoslovakia • Czechoslovakia was a POWERFUL new country that had the support of the Soviet Union. • In September 1938, Hitler demanded German speakers in Czech. to be allowed to join his “greater Germany”. • WAR between Germany and Czechoslovakia seemed likely.
Munich Conference • In order to decrease the tension between Germany and Czechoslovakia, Chamberlain (Britain PM), Hitler, Daladier (French PM), and Mussolini met. • It was decided that Germany would occupy Sudetenland and other parts of Czechoslovakia were given to Poland and Hungary. • The Czechoslovakia government was told to agree or face Germany alone. • This was an attempt to prevent war! • The leaders were congratulated for avoiding war!
Promises, Promises. • Hitler agreed that he wouldn’t take over any more land in exchange for the Czechoslovakian land. • However, Hitler ordered his troops to “smash the remainder of the Czech state”. On March 15, 1939, Germany invaded the remaining part of Czechoslovakia.
