What’s cyberbullying? • Cyberbullyingis similar to other types of bullying, except it takes place online and through text messages sent to cell phones. • Cyberbulliescan be classmates, online acquaintances, and even anonymous users, but most often they do know their victims.
And its effects? • It can occur in the child's home. • It can be harsher than face-to-face bullying. • It can be far-reaching. • It can be anonymous. • It may seem inescapable.
direct attack? • Instant messaging/text harassment • Stealing passwords • Blogs • Websites • Sending pictures through email and text • Internet polling • Interactive gaming • Sending malicious code • Sending porn or other junk emails • Impersonation
Teens & sexting? • 4% of cell-owning teens ages 12-17 say they have sent sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude images of themselves to someone else via text messaging • 15% of cell-owning teens ages 12-17 say they have received “sexts” • Older teens are much more likely to send and receive these images • The teens who pay their own phone bills are more likely to send “sexts”
Teens & sexting? 3 main scenarios for sexting: • exchange of images solely between two romantic partners; • exchanges between partners that are shared with others outside the relationship; • exchanges between people who are not yet in a relationship, but where at least one person hopes to be.

What’s going on in Texas? SB 407 was just signed into law by Gov. Perry. • Reduces sexting to a misdemeanor. • Punishable by a fine of not more than $4,000, confinement in jail for less than a year, or both.
What to do as a parent? • Talk to your kids about what they’re doing in cyberspace. • Know who your kids are communicating with. • Consider limitations on electronic communication. • Be aware of what your teens are posting publicly. • Set expectations.
Food for thought… • Don’t assume anything you send or post is going to remain private. • There is no changing your mind in cyberspace. • Don’t give into pressure to do something that makes you uncomfortable. • Consider the recipient’s reaction. • Nothing is truly anonymous.
