How Should We Incorporate Ethnomusicology into the Classroom?
In order to preserve and share the music of different cultures, teachers and researchers have often taken living traditions and put them in a box, literally…. • What effects has this had on our perceptions of “world music?” • Can it be beneficial?
How can we bring music into the classroom as a living tradition and not a static medium?
One approach could be to incorporate not only musical compositions, but musical techniques for creation, improvisation, and education into the classroom. • How could we accomplish this? • And how might this be effective?
What are the effects of these musical fusions? • Paul Simon – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqXxnIDiCrs • Bach - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqXxnIDiCrs • Are they relevant to the classroom?
Because of the diversity of most American classrooms ,the teacher will rarely have the same cultural background as all the students. Is the teacher responsible to include the cultures of all his or her students?
*It is essential to incorporate music from many cultures into the classroom to celebrate the diversity of our students and the world around us. * Replication of established traditions, use of musical techniques from other cultures, and fusion of musical styles can all help students learn and grow through music as long as these activities are approached with respect towards all cultures and people involved. CONCLUSIONS!!!
