EA 1Presenting Findings from a Survey • Possible assumptions: • Hard work and frugality are still important American values. • All people can achieve success through hard work. • Young people don’t understand the relationship between hard work and money. • An important sign of success in the United States is having a steady job and working hard. • The American public is satisfied with its government. • Patriotism in America is at an all-time high.
EA 1Presenting Findings from a Survey • Choose two people with whom you will work well. • Begin brainstorming some assumptions and choose one TODAY! • Make sure you have defined key terms!
EA 1Presenting Findings from a Survey • Write your assumption on a piece of paper • Define key terms to clarify what you are questioning • Begin drafting your survey (at least 5 questions; no more than 10) • Ask another group to read it for clarity • Grab a laptop and begin typing your survey • By the end of the period (a quarter after), you should: • Have a typed survey with no errors and only ONE page! • Save your survey to a safe, accessible location! • Send it to me via email (hlittle@everettsd.org) by 3pm! At 3:01, I will no longer be able to copy it for you!
Learning Focus • Read the Learning Focus on page 83 • What skill will you be required to demonstrate in this next section? (Hint: it is repeated a few times) • WNB – Literary Terms • Persuasive Argument: convinces readers to accept or believe a writer’s perspective on a topic • Example: Find a reading from Unit 1 that is a persuasive argument, and write its title • Non-Example: Find a reading from Unit 1 that is not a persuasive argument, and write its title
Previewing the Text • Read the quote and respond in the QuickWrite section of your WNB • Title: The Road to Success • What is each quote saying about the American Dream and success?
Previewing the Text/Synthesis Quote 1: “Through hard work and perseverance my father got a scholarship to study in a magical place, America, that’s shone as a beacon of freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before him.”
Previewing the Text/Synthesis Quote 2: “ – it is that fundamental belief – I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper – that makes this country work. It’s what allows us to pursue our individual dreams, yet still come together as a single American family. ‘E pluribus unum,’ out of many, one.”
Previewing the Text/Synthesis Quote 3: “ – and the right to fail is one of the few freedoms that this country does not grant its citizens.”
Previewing the Text/Synthesis Quote 4: “ I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived… I wanted to live deep and suck the marrow of life...”
Previewing the Text/Synthesis Turn and talk: What do these texts share? How are they different? Based on these four quotes, is the American Dream defined by one’s successes, failures, or both?
Previewing the Text/Synthesis • We will now listen to one of these texts. Follow along on page 84. • Mark the following as you listen: • The Hook • Claim (thesis) • Concession/Refutation • Support • Call to Action
Previewing the Text/Synthesis • Keynote Address – 2004 Democratic National Convention by Barack Obama • http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eWynt87PaJ0
Group Work EA 1 You will have most of the rest of the period to meet with your survey groups. Here are some things you may do: • Analyze the survey data and calculate percentages • Decide who will be completing which tasks for the written piece (submitted to TI.com by Sunday 11:59pm), the presentation, etc. • Set up times/dates to meet (get contact info from each other) • If you remembered a laptop, begin working on your presentation/written piece (outline slides, outline the paper, etc) *If your group cannot work on ANY of these things, you made a choice to get together this weekend. You will now use this time for other homework…NOT SOCIAL HOUR!
Lit Circle Reflection Please take this time to reflect on the Lit Circles/Socratic Seminars. I need honest, polite feedback. Please be specific. • What did you like/enjoy/find useful during this process? (examples: group time, seminars, double entry journals, choosing your book, setting your schedule, etc.) • What did you dislike/not enjoy/find unhelpful during this process (examples: group time, seminars, double entry journals, choosing your book, setting your schedule, etc.) • In reference to some of the examples you gave above, what could we do in the future to improve upon this process? • Would you want to do Lit Circles again? If yes, the same exact way? If no, why and what could we do instead for independent reading?
