The Plan of Action Our goals were simple, we wanted to get the word out to the Airmen of Holloman AFB and community of Alamogordo about the Locks of Love Foundation. Furthermore, we also wanted to be able to get enough local volunteers to be able to collect a minimum of 100 inches of hair! Our final goal was to just have some FUN while making a difference in someone's life.
What is the Locks of Love Foundation Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Our mission is to return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children. The children receive hair prostheses free of charge or on a sliding scale, based on financial need. www.locksoflove.org
What we Purchased: 2 Poster boards Paint Glue Markers Glitter Border Tape Stencil Letters Arts & Crafts Acc. Table Cloths Flyers from Staples Zip Lock Bags Rubber Bands A special Thanks to our sponsor for donating $100 to help us get started!
Where We Were John Cutter Ashley Labrie With permission from Wal-Mart managers we were allowed to set up right outside and speak to anyone and everyone about not only the Holloman BIG GIVE, but the Locks of Love Foundation and what we hope to achieve.
Where We Were Austin Ecker Jeffrey Messer Adam Lane We set up outside Wal-Mart every weekend taking turns on shifts. Most weekends were hot and HUMID, and length of time we stayed varied due to the Alamogordo ‘monsoon season’ and it’s rainy days
Where We Were Garrett Cantwell Jose De Santiago Manuel Becker John Cutter We received permission from AAFES Services Business Manager Janet G. Payton to be allowed to set up outside the Holloman AFB BX every Friday from 1000-1400 to catch the ‘lunch rush’ and get the word to the Airmen of HAFB and their dependants.
Where We Were Jose De Santiago Adam Lane Jeffrey Messer As you can tell we had fun with the experience of interacting with the community and being able to better inform them about Locks of Love and how they may change the life of a child. ( Don’t let the smiles fool you, it was a hot one that day and the Korean food next door smelt AMAZING!)
See Who Donated The following are some photos of volunteers who cut a minimum of 10” off and were kind enough to take some pictures in the process. Before After
See Who Donated Before After Thank YOU!
See Who Donated Before After It takes A LOT of courage to cut your hair this much! Looks good and for a great cause!
See Who Donated Before After A great looking haircut provide by Stylique Salon inside Holloman AFB AAFES BX
See Who Donated WOW! I think WOW! says it all. This individual actually donated MORE than the 10”minimum. I’m sure the New Mexico summer heat shouldn’t bother you anymore!
See Who Donated Maura Solis Reason why I donated: “Locks of Love is such a great program! Hair adds to the beauty of a person, and I wanted to be able to bring joy and more beauty to another person's life that has suffered the loss of their hair.”
Other Items Donated Brushes, Hair Clips, Hair Bands, Head Bands, assorted color scrunches
Outcome • We collected 227” of donated locks, beating our Goal of 100” by over DOUBLE! • Enough hair to make roughly FOUR hair pieces. (These hair pieces which are given to children recipients for FREE from Locks of Love retail for $3500-$6000) • So, • FOUR hairpieces may not sound like a lot, but in reality we could possibly have saved Four separate families from spending a total of roughly $18,000 on just hair pieces (lets not forgot how much money they spend on medical care alone!)
