  1. Work From Home Altered Sleep Schedules Of 67% Indian During Coronavirus Lockdown The coronavirus has enforced a lockdown In India, like many other countries. The effect of the lockdown is that it has disrupted life but there is one particular area that has created a lot of disturbance. That is the sleep schedule! As per a survey conducted recently, more than 81% of the respondents said that they would sleep better after the end of the lockdown. Work from Home due to Corona Lockdown The country is in a lockdown as a strategy to stop the spread of the virus. The government has mandated that private companies should allow their employees to work from home. That has led to a blur in the routine. People in an effort to juggle work and home are finding less time to sleep. A survey conducted across various cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, etc has concluded that about 67% of the respondents said that work from home has altered their sleep schedules. Most of them stated that they are now staying up until 11 PM which they had not done before lockdown. The 1,500 people that participated in the survey were in the age group of 25 to 45 years. 55% of the respondents were in the age group between 25 to 35 and about 20% of those that participated were in the 36 to 45 age range.

  2. The Sleeping Pattern according to the Survey As per the study conducted on 1,500 people living in various Indian cities, 46% of the participants said that prior to lockdown they slept before 11 PM but now only 39% of the respondents get to bed before 11%. Another interesting fact is that there is an increase in the % of people who are sleeping past 12 AM. 35% of the people said that they are sleeping after 12 AM as opposed to 25% of the participants who said that their usual bedtime is post-12 AM. This sleeping pattern shows that there is a 40% increase in people who are sleeping late after the lockdown. According to this study, even the number of hours of sleep has reduced with 36% of the respondents saying they sleep less than 6 hours every night as opposed to 25% before the lockdown. Reasons for Late Nights The survey also asked the reason behind this late-sleeping pattern. The results were like this: 49% of the respondents said concerns about job security, finance, and worry about family health were behind sleeplessness. 15% said they are working late hours. 14% confessed that binge-watching TV shows have affected their sleep pattern. What is the Effect of this Bad Sleeping Pattern? Medical experts say that the window of sleep between 11 PM and 4 AM is vital for people as it is the time when the body rejuvenates its organs. Irregular sleeppatterns also have a negative effect on the body’s immunity. It is important to keep the immune system healthy as it is the only line of defense against the COVID 19. Due to the irregular sleep pattern, the brain is confused and affects hormone production especially melatonin. That can result in further delay in the onset of sleep and also lead to many health issues. How to get back to a Regular Sleep Routine?

  3. There are a few simple tips that experts recommend to fix this issue. Some of them are: Turning off all electronic gadgets that emit blue light at least 2 hours before bedtime. Create a sleep routine so that you can gradually work your way to sleeping before 11 PM. Try yoga and/or meditation as regular exercises to help with sleep-related issues. Ensure you get optimal natural light as that helps the body distinguish between dark and light. Create a relaxing environment before bedtime so that the mind is calm. Avoid naps during the day as that can impact the time you sleep at night. Take a shower or soak your feet in warm water as that relaxes the mind. Do not use the bedroom as a work area as that confuses the brain. The bedroom is meant for sleep and should remain so. Create the right ambiance for sleep blocking noise and light and also maintaining optimal temperature. Sleep on a comfortable mattress which prevents you from waking up with aches and pains. If you don’t have one, it is a good time to look for the best mattress online in India like Wakefit. Have a healthy and early dinner so that it helps digestion. Stay away from news and social media which often has something alarming to tell about the current situation.

  4. The lockdown has confined the people to their homes. People are facing the pressure of balancing work and also taking care of the needs of the family. With many spending more time multitasking between work and personal commitments, sleep has taken a backseat. But sleep is essential not only to keep the energy levels up but also to fight the disease. So follow a healthy lifestyle and set right your sleep schedule as that is critical.
