The American Economic System Develops • Capitalism – individuals put their capital, or money, into a business in hopes of making a profit. • Free enterprise – people are free to buy, sell and produce whatever they want.
Major Elements: • Competition • Profit • Private property • Economic freedom
New Technology • Scientific discoveries that simplify work. • 1793- Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. • Quickly and effectively removed seeds from cotton fiber. • Enabled one person to do the work of 50.
Patent- • Gives an inventor the legal right to the invention and its profits for a certain period of time.
The United States Economy Diversifies! • Northeast – Manufacturing/Factories • South and West - Agriculture and Farming
