  3. OBJECTIVES: • Distinguish between elements and compounds • Distinguish between pure substances and mixtures • Classify mixtures as homogeneous or heterogeneous • Compare and contrast mixtures and compounds

  4. What are the Basic Building Blocks of matter? • Atoms – the smallest unit of an element • Element – pure substances that contain only one type of atom • Pure substance – one kind of element or molecule

  5. What is a Mixture? • A sample of matter that contains two or more substances. • Most kinds of foods are mixtures • Air is a mixture What About Water(H2O), is it a mixture or not?

  6. What are the two types of Mixtures? • Heterogeneous – nonuniform composition, not evenly mixed. • Homogeneous – uniform composition, different parts can not be seen.

  7. What are compounds? How are they different from mixtures? • Compounds are composed of two or more elements chemically joined. H2O • Mixtures are composed of two or more elements physically mixed together. Sand and Rocks mixed together.

  8. How can we separate mixtures? • Filtration- users a porous barrier to separate a solid from a liquid • Distillation- technique that uses different boiling points to separate substances • Crystallization- technique that results in the formation of pure solid particles • Sublimation- process in which solid turn directly into a gas • Chromatography- technique that separates the components of a mixture based on the ability of each component to travel across another material.
