Good Afternoon • Have out your analysis questions Act. 73 pg. E-6& 74 #1-5 pg. E-10 • Have your Science Books and pen/pencil ready to begin class! Books should be open to pg. E-6-make sure your data table of the vehicle features is stapled in your journal!
Agenda • Objective • Discuss Analysis Questions • Set up Journal Act. 75 • Activity 75 • Homework
Objective • Students will be able to analyze, compare, and draw conclusions using distance vs. time graphs.
Analysis Questions-Act. 73 • #1-compare the features from Step #2 to your table How are they similar? brakes, length, top speed, width Different? Height, length, fuel consumption, mass, airbags Braking distance, acceleration
#2 explain why were the X less important? • Not safe, valuable, not a concern
#3- what factors should people consider when buying a car? • Exterior • Miles per hour • Mileage • Interior features • make/model/color • Passenger quantity
#4- do car featuresa-reduce damage? • Brakes • Length • Width • Braking distance • mass
#4- do car featuresB- prevent accidents? Explain • Airbags • Brakes • Braking distance • Tires • AWD-all wheel drive • Height • Length • Width • Mass • Fuel consumption
#5- which vehicle do you think safer- Vehicle 1 or Vehicle 2? Why? • Vehicle 2 has more safety features height, length, width, mass, top speed, acceleration, braking distnace, fuel consumption, and airbags
Analysis Questions • #1- According to the data from Part A, what is the speed of the cart? • #2-According to your data from Part B, what is the effect of release height on speed? • #4- What part of your experimental design in Part B -increased & decreased confidence • #5-What is a car’s speed in m/s if it travels: • A. 5 meters in 0.1 seconds= • 50 m/s • B. 5 meters in 0.2 seconds= • 25 m/s • C. 10 meters in 0.2 seconds= 50 m/s
#3- Units measured for speed • Cm/sec • Cm/min • Miles/hour • Km/hr • m/sec
Activity 75: Interpreting Motion Graphs • Date: 2/18/14 • Challenge Question: How can you use a graph to describe motion? • Getting Started: When you measured the speed of a cart rolling down a track, do you think the carts were going the same speed the whole time?
Getting Started • The cart started at 0 m/s and then sped up to its top speed. Then it eventually slowed down and ended up at 0 m/s again. • You found the average speed over a distance of 100 cm.
Glossary • 1. acceleration • 2. deceleration
(Distance vs. Time )Motion Graph • These graphs describe and interpret motion as linear (constant & straight) • Features in the motion graph: -a straight line indicates constant speed -a horizontal line indicates no motion, or 0 speed. -a + sloped line (upward) indicates motion away from start point - a – sloped line (downward) indicates motion toward start point
Motion Graph - a steeper slope indicates a faster speed - a curved line of changing slope indicates acceleration- change (increase) in speed
Slope • A constant rate of change • slope =the change in y /the change in x
Introduction pg. E-12 • The road from Josh’s andTeasha’s houses to the school is straight, and a trip directly to school wouldn’t require any turning. • What type of motion is shown? • Why?
Pg. E-13 • Materials pg. • Procedure: Read steps #1-5 *Show student sheets for the activity
Trip Strips • A- car travels 4 min. to return home (40 mph) • B-car travels 4 miles in 8 min (30mph) • C-Car stops for 6 minutes while picking up a friend • D-Car travels 3 miles toward school in 6 minutes • E- Josh realizing he may have forgotten his homework pulls over & looks through his back pack for 1 min. • F-Teasha’s car gets caught in traffic and travels 1 mile in 8 minutes • G-car travels 2 miles in 5 minutes • H- Car stops for 2 minutes
Activity 75 • Work with your partner and complete steps #1-5 in the procedure • Final product needs to be turned in at the end of class to receive full credit!
Homework Exit Slip • Analysis Questions #1-3 pg. E-14 • Extra Credit Due Friday Analysis #6 & Extension #2- Act. 74 pg. E-10 • Act. 74- 2/17/14 • Answer challenge question with complete sentences • Act. 75- 2/18/14 Answer challenge questions with complete sentences
