Why sustainable development? • Rich and poor societies and regions • Famine and lack of water for 2 billion people • Consumerism • Global changes of climate • Global pollution of the environment • Overexploitation of natural resources by 40 % (environmental footprint)
GRI – Global reporting platform • 1997 r. – Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) established by Coalition for Environmentally Responsable Economy (CERES) and UNEP • GRI provides methodology for reporting • GRI has a register of reports • Reporting is voluntary • Reports are addressed to all interested parties (stakeholders)
Reporting in brief • Presentation of current status and goals of the enterprise • Presentation of dynamic changes of sustainable development indicators
Reporting in brief – continued • What indicators? • - concerning profile and structure of the enterprise, • - concerning economy of the enterprise, • - concerning environmental issues of the enterprise, • - concerning social issues of the enterprise (employment, human rights, lobbing, product resposibility).
Statistics of reporting • GRI reports include 79 Performance Indicators (PI) – economical, social and environmental. • There are 12 000 reports registered in GRI (2012). • Food sector registered ca. 700 reports, including 300 from European enterprises. • Large enterpises registered ca. 90 % of total number of reports. • From Poland: - Coca-Cola HBC Polska, - Danone Poland, - Kompania Piwowarska (SABMiller).
Agrisector in sustainable development – strategy and challenges • Renewable energy and efficient technologies • Water-efficient technologies • Social control (mass media, non-governmental organizations) • Efficient agriculture and biodiversity protection • Sustainable development as basis for new products, new clients and market advantage
