OVERVIEW • M16A4 DISASSEMBLY • CARE AND CLEANING • M16A4 ASSEMBLY • FUNCTIONS CHECK
1)Always ensure your weapon is clear Selector lever on safe Point the weapon in a safe direction 2) Remove the sling DISASSEMBLE THE M16 2 1
3 DISASSEMBLE THE M16 3) Push both takedown pins as far as they will go. 4) Separate upper and lower receivers.
(5) Pull back charging handle and bolt carrier. (6) Remove charging handle. (7) Remove bolt carrier and bolt. DISASSEMBLE THE M16 5 & 6 7
8) Remove firing pin retaining pin. 9) Push bolt assembly inward to locked position. DISASSEMBLE THE M16 8 & 9
DISASSEMBLE THE M16 10) Drop firing pin out to the rear of bolt carrier. 11) Remove bolt cam pin. 12) Remove bolt assembly from carrier. 10 11 12

REMOVE THE BUFFER AND ACTION SPRING 13) Press in buffer, depress retainer, and release buffer. 14) Remove buffer and action spring. 13 & 14
NORMAL MAINTENANCE • INSPECTION • RUST • WORN, BROKEN, OR CRACKED PARTS • KEEP MUZZLE CLEAR • BEFORE FIRING • LIGHT LUBRICANTS ON ALL MOVING PARTS • CHAMBER, BORE, FACE OF BOLT DRY
BORE BRUSH CHAMBER BRUSH GENERAL PURPOSE BRUSH CLEANER, LUBRICANT, & PRESERVATIVE BOTTLE (3) CLEANING RODS AND HANDLE CLEANING ROD TIP POUCH CLEANING GEAR COMPONENTS
CLEANER - Contains solvents. LUBRICANT - Lays down a layer of teflon. PRESERVATIVE - Prevents rust from forming. CLP
Attach three rod sections and bore brush together Apply CLP to the brush, drop it through chamber, and pull the cleaning rod through the barrel Inspect the bore Attach patch holder Insert rod through chamber CARE AND CLEANING:UPPER RECEIVER
Attach chamber brush to one rod and insert into chamber Scrub the chamber and bolt lugs by plunging and rotating Clean the interior with general purpose brush and CLP Dry the bore, chamber, and interior with patches CARE AND CLEANING:UPPER RECEIVER
Scrub with the all purpose brush and CLP Insert a swab into the rear of the bolt and swab out the firing pin recess and gas ports Dry with cloth rags or patches Q-tips or pipe cleaners One drop of CLP CARE AND CLEANING:BOLT CARRIER
Clean buffer recess with cloth dipped in CLP Ensure it is free of dirt, mud Apply 1 drop of CLP to each pin of the trigger assembly Dry up excess with q-tips Lube/apply light coat CARE AND CLEANING:LOWER RECEIVER
Hot, wet (jungle): keep generously lubed Hot, dry (desert): keep free of dirt build up If CLP is used, use sparingly MAINTENANCE IN DIFFERENT CLIMATES
Cold, arctic (snow): use lubricating oil, arctic weapons (LAW) if temperature exceeds below -35 degrees If taken inside, wipe moisture away and apply lubricant. May have to leave weapon in protected area MAINTENANCE IN DIFFERENT CLIMATES
Lightly lube the inside of the upper receiver, bore, chamber, outer surfaces of the barrel, and surfaces of the handguard Lube all parts of the rear sight assembly LUBRICANTS:UPPER RECEIVER
Lube the outside of the cam pin area Lightly lube the charging handle LUBRICANTS:BOLT CARRIER GROUP
Lightly lube the inside of the lower receiver Lube the inside moving parts and their pins LUBRICANTS:LOWER RECEIVER
(1) Insert action spring and buffer. (2) Slide bolt into carrier. REASSEMBLE THE M16A4 1 2
(3) Replace bolt cam pin.(4) Drop and seat firing pin.(5) Pull bolt out until extended. REASSEMBLE THE M16A4 4 3 5
(6) Replace firing pin retaining pin.(7) Engage, then push charging handle part way.(8) Slide in bolt carrier group REASSEMBLE THE M16A4 6 7 8
10 9 11 12 (9) Push charging handle and bolt carrier group together. (10) Join upper and lower receivers.(11) Engage takedown pins.(12) Ensure weapon is on SAFE. REASSEMBLE THE M16A4
SAFE: Pull the charging handle to the rear and release, placing on safe, pull trigger, hammer should not fall FUNCTION CHECK
Semi: Selector lever on semi Pull the trigger and hold, the hammer should fall While holding the trigger to the rear charge the weapon once Release the trigger, you will hear a clunk Squeeze the trigger again, the hammer should fall FUNCTION CHECK
Charge the weapon once and place on burst: Squeeze the trigger, the hammer should fall While holding the trigger to the rear, charge the weapon three times Release the trigger, you should hear an audible clunk. Squeeze the trigger again, the hammer should fall Charge the weapon once and place the weapon on safe Close the ejection port cover FUNCTION CHECK
