  13. WPN/WLAN: Enterprise Scenarios

  14. WPN/WLAN: Hot Spots and Train/Highways

  15. Wireless Mesh Network (Ad Hoc Networks) • A relay-based network enhancements, in metropolitan and wide-are environments. • A simple and low-priced way to realize wireless MAN and WAN MP-to-MP, unicast, multicast and broadcast systems, with or without mobility. • By plenty mesh nodes with shorter distances, high bit rate and ubiquitous communication can be facilitated. • Technology domains: • physical layer, medium access layer, routing protocol, cross-layer optimization, system topologies, and infrastructure deployment.

  16. Application Scenarios Wirelessmesh networkfor residential broadband [Source]: D. Beyer, “Wireless Mesh Networks for Residential Broadband,” Nokia, 2002.

  17. Application Scenarios of WMN Mesh Moves Into the Wireless Office [Source]: J. Wexler, “Mesh Moves Into the Wireless Office,” http://www.computerworld.com/mobiletopics/mobile/technology/, 2002.

  18. Importance of WMN • Facilitating broadband service. • Robust and enhanced coverage. • Low cost. • Low initial investments and incremental deployment. • Minimum cabling cost. • High reliability. • More mesh nodes, more reliable. • WMN/Ad Hoc networks are the basis for: • WSN • WBN • WPN • Home entertainment networks

  19. Conclusions • variety of connections • network heterogeneity • many applications • good opportunity for Taiwan industry
